2003 Rookie Draft COMMENTARY

Gotta have a place to talk smack about each others' picks! :p

Waiting on Matt....

Philadelphia Freedom May 21st, 2003 08:08 AM

The party has started!

It's on!!

RABID LLAMAS May 21st, 2003 09:13 AM

Glad you got your man! Bring on the project.

Preds May 21st, 2003 09:18 AM

I tried hard to move up and snag Willis McGahee, offering 3 picks at one point (including both of my #1's) to both Matt at 1.1 and the Llamas at 1.2.

I think he's a 3 yr project (2 on the DS) before he earnes his salary.

My view on the Bills RB situation has Willis sitting out the year on IR, then splitting carries with Henry in 2004 as he learns the ropes in the NFL. In 2005, I expect the Bills to trade Henry (who will still be under contract) and give Willis the Feature Back role (assuming he's comeback from the injury).

Good pick, high risk, but their could be a huge reward for you in a few years. You'll just have to be very patient with him.

Nittany Dodgers May 21st, 2003 09:55 AM

I don't think he's going to have to wait as long for Willis. He blew his knee out so early in the year, I think he'll be full speed by camp next year. They might keep Henry around for insurance, but I could also see them trading him for a couple of early picks if his stock is still high. They have plenty of mediocre depth behind Henry that they don't need him once McGahee is ready, and why waste having both of them while Henry gets another year older, when you could possible get a couple of #1 like New Orleans did. Of course if Henry has an off year, and his stock drops, they might be more inclined to keep him. But also, if this happens, they'll be less inclined to work McGahee in slowly. That's my read anyway.

Brain Dead Squirrel Chasers May 21st, 2003 12:30 PM

You gotta love Maghee. Talk about big risk, but the payoff could be enormous. Just think of this pick as the #1 overall pick of 2004. I'll personally be rooting for Magahee.

Preds May 21st, 2003 01:50 PM

You f**k'r Matt!!! I had a press conference all written up for Byron!!!

Aargh!!!

Of course, you did leave a very talented player sitting there for me :)... anyone want to move up now? :D

Nittany Dodgers May 22nd, 2003 10:20 AM

The Dodgers are aware they are on the clock. We should be making an anouncement (either deal or a pick) within an hour or two.

Nittany Dodgers May 22nd, 2003 01:00 PM

Well, it's a little reassuring that if I hadn't gone with the complete homerism pick, my second choice was agreed upon by another team.

Nice pick with Brown, Jake.

Mutts May 22nd, 2003 01:02 PM

Thanks. I'm in complete shock, actually. I hadn't even included Brown on my draft board... didn't think I had a shot.

Preds May 22nd, 2003 01:03 PM

I seriously considered Brown at 1.5... I just couldn't let a talent like Andre Johnson who will all but be handed the starting job with an up and coming QB slide any further and took who was IMO the best player available.

Is that the polite version of Mel Kipper's "It's obvious that the NY Jets have no idea what the draft is all about."

Mutts May 22nd, 2003 01:20 PM

lol

:toast:

Brain Dead Squirrel Chasers May 22nd, 2003 02:09 PM

Mel Kiper Jr. :D

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 22nd, 2003 04:18 PM

Gee... is it Mike's pick again? I thought it was the Insects, but based on the long pause, I've gotta believe Mike's got something to do with it! :p ;) :p

PS. Hard to tell it's getting close to my first pick, yah! lol

I love how I get blamed when I have nothing to do with holding things up :p :D. Relax and have a :Alcoholic my friend, I'm sure the Insects will make a pick soon!

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 22nd, 2003 04:55 PM

Was hoping that would get some kind of response from you, Mike... boards are slow today! :D

Flaxwless May 22nd, 2003 04:58 PM

Make a pick now!

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 22nd, 2003 05:07 PM

Pick is in... Mike's on the clock... look out league!!!   :D

Flaxwless May 22nd, 2003 05:08 PM

at Mike!

Great pick Jim!

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 22nd, 2003 05:16 PM

Thanks... I had Palmer and Boller as #1 and #2 on my short list... then about 6 RB/WRs that I would have liked to have acquired, but not this high in the draft. I saw everyone except Palmer as mid-second round material (at least salary wise). Now I'm off the board until round three... where I get to pick up scraps from the "leftovers" of the draft.

INTERESTING NOTE: In actuality, this pick of Palmer becomes basically a straight up "Palmer for WR Curtis Conway" trade (how I originally acquired the pick from the Freedom). I can live with that!

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 22nd, 2003 05:25 PM

Mike... sorry about the Palmer thing (not really!)... but I think O-Smith is a good addition to your squad, especially with Bennett. I, too, loved how he proclaimed himself the "steal of the draft." Should be fun to watch how he develops!

Nittany Dodgers May 22nd, 2003 05:27 PM

Onterrio is a good handcuff to Bennett. If Bennett get into many more shootouts (literraly) then maybe he'll be usefull sooner rather than later. 5'10", though? Not unless he's wearing 1 1/2 inch spikes.

Interesting... the SPORTING NEWS has him listed as 5'11"...while All Pro Scouting Service has him as 5'9". Hmm... maybe that comment about high heels wasn't too far off?

I didn't mean to insult his masculinity that he would be wearing heals. I meant if he was wearing long cleats, but I guess either way would work.

I read somewhere that he was a stretch at the 5' 9" listing, but I don't remember the source.

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 22nd, 2003 05:47 PM

:D

I'm sure he's a "man's man." Question is, will he produce? For his sake, I hope he gets his shot... for Mike's sake, a resounding "I HOPE NOT!!!"
:p

The kicker is, I came REAL close to trading up ahead of you 1 slot to take Palmer by giving up my 2 #2's since I was surprised he was still stitting out there... but I have other players I want in the 2nd and didn't pull the trigger on a deal since I think those picks have very good value in this draft, so I couldn't do it.

In retrospect, I wish I would have given up the picks, I could have snagged Palmer at 1.9, let you take Boller at 1.10, and still would have gotten my targeted player Onterrio Smith at 1.11.

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 22nd, 2003 06:35 PM

Might have worked for you, Mike... however, if Palmer wasn't available to me at 1.10, I might have entertained an offer to trade down... so who knows... gotta love the art of the draft, though!

RABID LLAMAS May 22nd, 2003 09:49 PM

I know I'm on the clock. Just waiting to see if a trade comes through. If not, I'll make a pick 1st thing in the morning.

Preds May 23rd, 2003 02:44 PM

Where are the Insects? The big debate over in the Griffin thread has me drooling for the next pick so we can move on!!

Let's just say there is a difference of opinion on the kid, I personally like him and took him in the early 3rd in my other cap league (granted that was to handcuff him to Portis)... I would have considered him at 2.5 myself if I hadn't traded down before the pick.

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 23rd, 2003 02:56 PM

I'd love to be able to pick before the weekend... but I'm guessing my starting the 3rd round will have to wait!

RABID LLAMAS May 23rd, 2003 03:58 PM

FYI - I know I'll be on the clock after the Insects. I leave for the beach at 9:00 EST and will not have access to a PC until late, LATE Saturday night EST.

If Insects get their pick in, I'll make both mine before I go, otherwise, I'll get it in as soon as I have access.

I don't disagree with the pick as much as I disagree with the insinuation that since Denver took him, it means he's a sure thing.

And I'll debate the next pick ad naseum too if you enjoy it so much, Mike. ;) It's just that the Griffin pick was the first where the guy going wasn't #1 or #2 on my board when he got selected.

Knowing this to be the case, and seeing as your only 1 pick out (and have back to back picks), can you provide a list for someone (say Jim) to pick in proxy for you? That way we could at least hit Rd 3 if not go deep into it.

Any chance of this?

Royal Hawaiian Opihi May 23rd, 2003 04:28 PM

Great minds think alike... I just emailed him the same thing, Mike. I'm pretty sure he'll go for this!

Nittany Dodgers May 23rd, 2003 05:50 PM

FYI, I'm heading out of work now. If the draft happens to get to me tonight, I'll try to check in before I head to bed. Otherwise I'll check in tomorrow afternoon.

Wait, what am I thinking, Mike is on the clock. I'm safe for another 48 hours!

Preds May 25th, 2003 08:23 PM

Guys, I have a pick ready for 3.5, but I want to see if I can acquire another nearby pcik first since there are 2 guys I want LOL.

So be patient, it is a holiday weekend!

Philadelphia Freedom May 25th, 2003 09:50 PM

Will pick tomorrow morning if 3.6 is up. MPM

Re: 2003 Rookie Draft COMMENTARY

I was trying to find my original opinion on Onterrio due to the Preds recently releasing him and I came across this little nugget of Nostradamusness.
