1.02 RB Rashard Mendenhall PIT
This decision was only made harder because Mendenhall was my 1.3 pick in Frenzy and I didn't want to put all my eggs in one basket.
Pre- NFL draft I had my Top 3 RBs based on talent as: 1. Mendenhall 2. DMC 3. Stewart All three are very close however and only situations would determine my final order. Post-draft I had them ranked... 1. DMC 2. Mendenhall (SACD)/ Stewart (Frenzy) 3. Stewart (SACD)/ Mendenhall (Frenzy) In the end I decided to go for broke and hitch my wagon to Mendenhall. He looks better than Stewart to me and his long-term prospects with Big ben and Santonio Holmes on offense is much better than Steve Smith and ???. Plus with renegs, I don't have to worry about having him sit or split time with Parker for the next 2 years. |
Re: 1.02 RB Rashard Mendenhall PIT
From what I've read, Mendy is the best RB in the draft. Very worthy of 1.1 consideration and a nice value at 1.2.
As you know I didn't think it was close between him and Stewart. |
Re: 1.02 RB Rashard Mendenhall PIT
I'm guessing you've posted your thoughts in Frenzy Preds? I'm just curious why you don't think Stewart is close to Mendy? I had them rated very close and still do, even for the long term (although Flax makes some good points with the uncertainty in Carolina).

Re: 1.02 RB Rashard Mendenhall PIT
I like Stewart better. I think Mendy will lose too many carries to FWP. I think Deangelo is unproven and more likely to lose the starting job alltogether to Stewart.
That being said, in a long-term dynasty league...I think I'd go with the one that I think has more talent. |
Re: 1.02 RB Rashard Mendenhall PIT
McD might lose some carries early to Fargas, but that will end quickly unless he gets fumblitis or something to get him in the doghouse. As far as being a #1 RB this year, I highly doubt it. As I said, he'll probably lose some carries early to Fargas and it wouldn't surprise me to see Bush vulture some goal line tds from him this year. Could he be a 1000 yd back this year? Definite possibility, but far from a certainty and if he ends up with 1000 and 7 tds (a good year for a rookie on a bad team), I'd hardly call that a #1 RB.
The only drawback I've seen with Stewart is the obvious toe injury, but you have to give the guy props when he runs a clean 4.45 WITH the toe injured. As long as it doesn't become a lingering problem, I would probably lean towards him over Mendenhall. I really like Mendenhall, but I have to think there was a reason he couldn't beat out his predecessor his first three years in Illinois. I also don't see FWP going anywhere for a while, so Mendenhall could face a platoon situation for a couple of years and Pitt did absolutely nothing to fortify it's leaky O-line this off season. Carolina on the other hand added a good combination of vet and rookie talent on the front line. Fox likes a smashmouth running game and DeAngelo doesn't fit the bill, so I think he'll just be used as a change of pace back. Having said all that, I would have been happy with either and had I intentionally tanked games at the end of last season like some of my opponents, I probably would have one of them.:dammit: |
Re: 1.02 RB Rashard Mendenhall PIT
This is so sad. Mendenhall or Stewart would have dramatically helped my team. I really wish my former owner hadn't traded away this pick. UGH.

In the past I drafted based off of combine times and situation (hasn't worked out very well for me). This year I have taken a different approach and searched all over youtube and the internet to watch game film/highlight videos on these guys, so let's see how my scouting eye is. Stewart's injury history + running style are huge big red flags, IMO. |

Again it's very close with post draft between Stewart and Mendenhall to me... If you like Stewart based on talent what is it that you saw in Stewart or the flaws in Mendenhall? Just curious as to another set of eyes. |
Re: 1.02 RB Rashard Mendenhall PIT
I agree wholeheartedly with you Flax on not putting too much stock into Combine times etc. That's why I specifically brought up the point that Mendenhall couldn't beat out the non-NFL calibre guy starting ahead of him his first three years. He could just be a late bloomer, but guys who are one year wonders scare me as much as marginal players who put up great Combine numbers.
As far as youtube and such, do you think anyone's going to put up clips of times a guy only looked average? I read about a top high school RB a couple of years ago named Noel Devine (U of Florida now) and I watched half a dozen youtube clips of him and he looked unstopable. Good vision, outstanding speed. Truly a man among boys. How has he looked at the collegiate level? Hardly in the discussion on potential NFL RB's. I've seen the same going from college to the NFL. Look at all the Florida receivers to be drafted high in the NFL draft. How many have actually played up to their lofty status? You can count them on one hand and have fingers to spare. I put more stock in how the guy did throughout his college career and against various competition than how he looked his last year in college. That being said, I still take into account his Combine numbers, progress from year to year, and a host of other things. I just think Stewart has a better overall grade. Not by a wide margin, but better. |

Also on the youtube clips... if everyone's video is of their best runs and is made to make them look good, they're all on an even playing field. So from the highlight packages I look to see who is more expolsive out of cuts, break tackle ability, vision, etc. Along with the pre-draft rankings, combine numbers, and any other source of information this all gets factore din to fill in the holes... but I think (we'll see afte r acouple of years) how this new scouting method works. |
