Make 3rd round picks PS eligible?

Hey guys... just tossing an idea out there that I think is worth discussiing, especially after our 1st ever draft with the new compensation system.

Would you guys be in favor of making 3rd round picks practice squad and taxi squad eligible? We would keep the number of draft picks per year assigned to the practice squad at only 1 pick, but this allows 3rd and 4th rounders to be considered for that 1 spot.

Why?

With the new compensation system... 2nd rounders jump in value again (as there are fewer 1st round comps) but 3rd rounders take an even BIGGER dive almost a whole round of talent taken before 3.1 (this year it was the 33rd player selected).

Also after years of drafting TS and such are getting filled up and 3rd rounders end up getting the ax... b/c you have 1st and 2nd rounders on your TS still.

I think it's a little wrinkle that will help the value of 3rd round draft picks and actually improve teh chances of getting stashing a useful player on the PS.

I think that would absolutely kill the value of the 4th round. You'd basically have 3rd and 4th round picks PS elligible, and you'd rarely see a 4th round pick even make the PS. We could just scrap the 4th round all-together if we did that.

Why would it kill anything?

It opens up options. Your 3rd rounders can still be placed in the TS.

You basically have two players to choose from for your practice squad the 3rd rounder or 4th rounder. If you think highly enough of your 4th rounder.... then you can make room for yoru 3rd on teh TS and keep your 4th rounder on PS.

Look at the talent people have stashed on their practice squads. Now imagine that talent if we opned up PS to 3rd rounders. It would be a much more viable tool in developing younger talent.

With all the compensation picks.... drafting in the 3rd round is like drafting in the 4th round. The talent is already gone by the 3rd round we are talking up 5th, 6th round NFL draft picks.

I'm actually excited by how the draft is shaking down this year... and I traded away all my picks until the middle of the 2nd round! Even with 6 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year... I'm still in favor of keeping this the way it is. Take a chance... watch all summer... make a difficult decision about who you're going to keep on your taxi squad... and let's leave the practice squad for players who really are LONG SHOTS to make the active roster.

The reason it would kill the 4th round is fairly obvious. Look at the talent on the current PS. There is hardly any. The only reason these picks are on a roster is because we specifically made the PS to give 4th rounders a home. When we expanded the draft to 4 rounds, we new 4th rounders had no shot of making the taxi squad, so we made the practice squad to give the deep deep players a place to stick around for up to 5 years. No team, unless their taxi squad is bare, is going to put a 3rd on the practice squad and a 4th on the taxi squad, that's just not going to happen regularly.

But, like most issues around here, my mind as well as your is probably already made up, so I'll let the rest of the league chatter about it.

Ha very true. Like I said... nothing I'm gonna die over. Just seems like something taht we could work into the league and would only help improve the quality of teams.

I mean if you choose to essentially throw away a 4th round pick to stash a 3rd on PS, that's the downside. You wasted a pick.

What I see happening or how I would use it is this... 3rd round pick on someone actually WORTh developing and having sit around for 5 years. Since it the PS teh player REALLY HAS TO DEVELOP into a active roster player b/c once activated they can not be put on TS or PS again. The chance of that happening in teh 3rd are still very slim.

Then your 4th rounder is where you take your pot shots... sign a back up RB and give him a 3 or 2 year deal on your TS. If this late round player doesn't make noise in 2 or 3 years... they will most likely never make noise.

4th rounders aren't devalued very much... a team could still roster them on TS or PS and a side your are over looking is what the 4th round loses in value the 3rd more than meks up for with the talent you will be able to stash for 5 years to see if they pan out... especially after the new compensation system that will dole out mounds and mounds of 2nd round comps year after year.

In the end rosters will be better for it, IMO. As it is now 3rd rounders are developmental projects and 4th rounders are absolute crap shoots.

So what is the purpose of draft picks, TS, and PS? Is it to make better rosters for teams or solely to hope to hit a jack pot in the 4th (practially 5th round) of rookie drafts? I think the league would be bette rtaking the former viewpoint, rather than the latter.

I think that changing the PS to 3rd and 4th rounders would render the fourth round moot. I think it would be rare for a fourth rounder to make the TS - more likely that you'd keep the previous year's draft picks rather than give this year's fourth rounder a 2 or 3 year contract.

I like the fourth round the way it is - a long shot with a place to wait for his day in the sun

I think rather than making the third round PS eligible we could consider adding some roster spots to the TS/PS. I have some guys that I drafted that likely I will not be able to keep at all this year and with the comp picks I am guessing that their are others that will be cutting a number of 2/3 round picks. While this is no huge loss it seems to undermine the idea that teams can get better by good drafting. Again not an issue that I feel super strongly about but I thought it might be worth considering now while people of thinking about it.

Exactly why I want to make 3rd rounders PS eligible. In the end it will help improve teams and offer more flexibility.

I think I would be opposed to adding more spot, b/c as is it already feels like anyone worth keeping is on a roster. If you make the 3rd round PS eligible it will allow people to stash a player who has a better chance at being productive rather than the super, duper long shot we have now.
