Quite possibly. We went around the entire island (except for the Westfjords which we’ll hit on a future trip, same for Snaefellness which we weren’t able to get to on this trip). We just got back this evening to Reykjavik for a couple nights (Golden Circle tomorrow) and then head out to the Westman Islands for a night before flying back late Thursday night.

We spent 4 days with Reykjavik as the base doing some whale and puffin viewing, Blue Lagoon visit, and a day and a half exploring the Golden Circle, Then we went east to Skogafoss, Skaftafell and glacier hiked, hit up Diamond Beach and stayed in Hörgsland. We stopped several places along the way. So much more to see and do. I would love to take the ring road all the way around some day.

We did the complete Ring Road on a 9 day small group tour (12 of us) then rented a car and drove back to the South Coast and went to the Westman Islands for some incredible up close Puffin Viewing. Got some amazing close picks of them from a blind on the edge of a cliff on Vestmannaeyjar island. Highly recommend it. The Golden Circle was a big disappointment for my wife and I. For us it was the most boring day out of the 11 days we were there, and the least interesting thing we did. We weren't huge fans of the Blue Lagoon either, overrated IMO. We actually liked the Vox Baths in the highlands better. We loved the South Coast and enjoyed the highlands and Eastfjords much more than the Golden Circle.

I wish we would have self drove the whole ring road, rather than do it on a tour. I knew going in that guided touring wasn't my travel style, but a major tour operator I work with wanted us to experience their product first hand so we went that route as it's good to know what my clients experience when they do guided tours. We've had our fair share of good and bad tour guides over the past coupe decades, but those have always been for day trips and a crappy guide is easy to move on from after one day. However, 9 days with a guide I just didn't see eye to eye with in any way damages what otherwise would have been a great experience. I really have to debate how to address that the next time I chat with the managing director of the company. Lets just say I would never hire her to represent my company on a tour, and she clearly knew we didn't see eye to eye that as she threw a couple insults at me the last day. One thing she didn't know, was my business relationship with her company's management. Whoops!

Our last 2 days with a car rental and off exploring on our own were so refreshing!

Personally, I prefer way more independence for our own personal travel, give me a local SIMM card for google maps, a car, and the ability to explore with complete freedom, that's my preferred mode of travel. That said, it's a ton more work when planning for clients with similar independence needs!

I want to go back to do the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the Westfjords.
