Ineligible Taxi Squad Players for 2006

The following players need to be promoted or released off the Taxi Squad, though exactly WHEN the 3 year max period expires is unclear and needs to be discussed.

ie. does the 3 year period end when then new seson begins on April 1st, or does it end at the end of the off-season free agency period when players must be declared?

We'll discuss this and then take action as needed, in the mean time, here are the players at risk:

Derby Cars - 2003 2.05 RB Quentin Griffin 2yrs, 452

Highlanders - 2003 2.02 RB Musa Smith 2yrs, 493

Opihi
- 2002 1.04 RB TJ Duckett 1yr, 689 (a 2002 draft pick that was TS ineligible LAST year and we somehow missed)

Opihi
- 2003 1.01 WR Charles Rogers 2yrs, 466

Swords
- 2003 2.06 QB Rex Grossman 2yrs, 306

Ragers
- 2003 1.03 RB Larry Johnson 2yrs, 1089

Re: Ineligible Taxi Squad Players for 2006

My preference would be for April 1st, so as to not let teams keep players they have ever intention of activating and the end of the summer from being able to take advantage of cap space that is not really there.

However, it might be easier for simplicity sake to just do it when the season starts and all of the other TS assignments are made.

Actually I think April 1st is the play as well, as it is, teams have already had their rookies on their rosters and through 3 Training camps and NFL seasons. A 4th Training Camp seems a bit much.

For the existing players above, I think we should allow a short grace period to get legal since we all missed this (say aweek) to activate them or they get released. Thoughts?

That works for me. Of those guys, I see only two that are a question one way or the other that the owner would probably like to see what is going to shake out this summer, but yes, having seen three camps and full seasons already, that should be enough time.

I'd much rather wait to see what shakes out in the summer and declare a promotion to the active squad or a drop at the same deadline as assigning contract years to rookies, RFAs and off-season UFAs. I've been playing the UFA market under the assumption that this is when a decision needs to be made.

I could go with April 1, but I'm not for an immediate decision. I say wait through summer and on April 1, 2007 begin this.

You're missing the point. The players above have already had a complete 3 years on the TS.

The rules state 3 years, not 3 1/2 or 3/14. Keeping them through late August gives you 4 Training Camps to evaluate, and that WASN'T the intent of the rule.

To add to this, the Rules specifically state

Quote:

6B. Taxi Squad

Each team will be allowed a 5 player Taxi Squad for players with 0-3 years of NFL experience (Players entering their 4th NFL season are NOT eligible for the Taxi Squad ).
All of the players listed in the 1st post have now entered their 4th NFL seasons (5th in the case of Duckett), which makes them ineligible to be on the TS now.

Doesn't matter to me. April 1 seems like a good future date for this. I'll abide by whatever decisons the league makes.

Regardless of the other players, a decision on Duckett must be made ASAP, he was illegally on it all last year (oversight by all of us, nobodies fault), but IMO he can't sit there any longer now.

So decide on activating or releasing Duckett now if you could, and we'll hash out the details on the others in the next couple days and issue a decision giving the involved teams enough time to act if necessary.

April 1st sounds good to me. 3 NFL training camps and seasons should be enough. JUst wondering is April 1st another date we have to remember or does it conicide with other off-season moves such as purging the IR, last day of the previous season, etc? If it is then April 1st is my vote, if it is not then a swicth to either of those days IR purge or end of previous season would be my vote.

As for Duckett he should go to Active roster immediatley. No questions about that.

April 1 is the official start of the new season each year. It's when all salaries are increased, contract years are reduced, players become FA's etc.

As for Duckett, I'm OK with allowing Jim to release off the TS without a penalty, we all missed it, not just him.

But he does have to decide ASAP whether to promote to Active and keep him or let him go.

Another date to remember, April 1st is good with me. 3 camps is enough time for me to decide, I'll post Larry's decision in a little bit. I'm pretty sure everyone knew what I intended to do with him and you're right by keeping them on the squad it does allow you a little more room to work with in the market.

I am fine with April 1 but I could also go with the date of the start of the rookie draft. That would be more or less three full years. Howver, after that amount of time I can't imagine an extra month makes that much difference.

I am good with April 1.

What about the players currently in violation?

How long should we give them to comply? A week?

Re: Ineligible Taxi Squad Players for 2006

I would think a week (say by June 29) is fair.

is it the start of the 4th season? then why are we in off-season?

here's how it was handled last year so I say we stick with it this season and start april 1 in 2007 (it has played a huge factor in how i've approached UFA)...Mike, I believe you even pointed out to me that I had to promote or drop Carr last season when we were assigning contract years so that's when i thought it was...had i been told that it was supposed to be done earlier, i wouldn't have been bitching:

...ok so Joe Horn was uped so I'm safe in making a decision now...i wasn't when i had outstanding bids that could have burnt me. and i feel for anyone that's in the same position

I'm a tad confused how Rex Grossman can fit so heavily into your plans. LOL

The only players we're talking about here are players drafted in 2003 or earlier. They've already sat on the TS for 3 full NFL off-seasons and seasons and have entered their 4th. Players drafted in 2004 still have a year of TS eligibility.

Whom teams decide to keep on their TS and PS of their 04, 05, and 06 picks doesn't need to be decided until late August, but 2003 players (and in the case of Duckett as a 2002 player) have already had 3 full years and teams can't continue to stash them on the TS. Decisions need to be made in those areas now (and probably should have occurred 2 months ago).

As for which NFL season we're in, OTA's and Mini-Camps have been going on since late April, and Training Camps open in late July. I think it's safe to say that the new NFL season has started.

I'll release Duckett... I'm assuming I'll still have to take the cap hit?

Also, do you need a decision now on Rogers? Or are we going with the contract year date for this year only?

There's no Cap Hit for releasing players off the TS. Technically he should have been active last year, but we all missed it, and I have no problem treating this as a TS cut myself, thus no cap penalty (IMO at least).

Still waiting on input from the rest of the league, but once all 12 teams have commented we'll likely give you guys a week to decide (trying not to be unfair here).

I agree with April 1st and a week grace period for rostered ineligibles now.

Want to guess which way I'm leaning on Rogers?!?! LOL

Let me know... and thanks for the grace period. I'd forgotten that any players released from the TS don't count against the salary cap.

I week grace period not penalties, just like releasing of TS

April 1st sounds good and a week grace period this year. Although, I'm not sure I'll need a week. No penalties just like TS.

April 1st and a weeks grace sounds fine to me.
