He is only 26 yo, and has a new QB that should be throwing to him all year, and one who will be FAR superior, even as a rookie, to the retreads he had last year. Having Hankerson healthy, and Garcon added to the mix, means more targets to cover.

So not sure how you can call him a fringe TE...Cooley is not going to make an impact on Davis this year or in the future.

And since when does the salary an owner wants to pay a player, always indicative to his worth to that team? I think I vastly overpaid for MJD last year, compared to Foster, but without MJD, I don't think I would have won the title last year.

If you have cap, and only a few players worth spending it on, then why not spend it?
