I think I am going to have to disagree with the Insects a little there. While I agree that the value of a stud player can't be underestimated I don't think the picks are worthless. If 5 teams decline to match that would make those picks 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. While it is hard to say that you will get an instant impact player it is likely that there may be some first round quality (NFL draft) players there.

In fact based on one website (I know that everyone has different opinions but for the sake of responding) there are 15 offensive skill position players that they see in this year draft with first round value. This breaks down as:

QB’s (3)
RB’s (2)
WR’s (7)
TE’s (3)

While not everyone would agree about the numbers it is likely that this year there could be a bit of value in the compensatory picks. Is it enough value to forgo resigning a stud? That I guess is what are all interested in seeing.

BTW- Mike your point about a replacement player makes a good bit of sense as well.
