If we just randomize the order, then whatever your worst case scnario slot is, you have a 1 in 12 chance of getting that position. With picking order, the odds of you getting that spot depend on you getting the 12th choice, and everyone else in the league agreeing that is the worst spot to draft out of. I know some people will pick at the top, others at the bottom, so unless the entire league wants to avoid the middle, and you as well, you're much more likely to get a position you're happy with.
