Culpepper Cut Loose

Today Bay Area Bloodsucking Insects GM Frank Alonzo announced the release of QB Duante Culpepper. It has been known for months that the team has approached Culpepper about restructuring his contract in order to relieve the Insects cap position.
Culpepper did agree to have his contract restructed but the two sides were unable to agree on terms. The squabble seemed to be on how much the signing bouns would be. It has been reported by sources that Culpepper wanted $750 dollars in signing bonus but the Insects would only offer $500.
With the two unable to agree to terms the Insects released Culpepper.
"We just couldn't agree to terms. We just have different ideas of my market value so I guess they decided to let the market set my value," said Culpepper, "It really is sad. I liked it here in the Bay Area and we felt we could defend the championship again."
When Frank Alonzo was approached on his bold move to release the superstar he cited several reasons.
"First and foremost I'd like to wish Duante the best of luck and we hope we will be able to resign him. But if we are unable to then we still believe we can defend the championship and repeat.
You have to rememeber Duante was injured for most of the season. In that span Steve [McNair] stepped it up and carried the team. We feel he can do it again.
Also as the GM I have to look at the future with Ricky Williams, Darrell Jackson, and Plaxico Burress becoming free agents next year we just needed to clear cap room."
Culpepper was slated to make $2,178 in 2002 and $2,396 in 2003.
