What I posted above about them is a pretty good distinction between the two. A 'law' only refers to a single process. Complex processes are 'theories.' Sure, there are some crazy scientific theories, but strictly speaking, these are not Scientific Theories, but scientific theories (follow that?). For example, String Theory, is a scientific theory. Plate Techtonics is a Scientific Theory. Even though it is called a Theory, you would be hard pressed to find a geologist who doesn't acknowledge Plate Techtonics. Quantum Mechanics is also a Scientific Theory, but as far as I understand (granted, physics is not my specialty), just about all advanced physics work is done based off of quantum mechanics. Quantum Mechanics, Plate Techtonics, and Modern Evolutionary Synthesis will never become Scientific Law's, by definition.
