Okay, I think I missed something here. I was talking about the salaries that are tied to rookie draft picks. For example, if someone where to pick a DB with the first pick of the draft this player would cost $400 under the system from last year. However, I can retain a player (offering a first round tender offer for $500). This means the top pick at DB is only 80% of the price for what in theory is a top flight proven free agent.
On the flip side a rookie RB would be $600 at pick 1.1 but it would cost $3,200 to tender a proven top flight RB. This seems to be a huge difference that really would disincent us from drafting defensive players (especially DL and DB's).
At first going with a third round tender offer made sense but I am not sure that it really helps that much. For example the DB, if taken at 1.1 is now $340. Better than $400 I am not sure that really balances the field enough.
BTW, I am fully aware that it is unlikely that a defensive player would ever be choosen in the top 10 but I think the current pay scale (or even the revised) pay scale all but guarantees it. Also, the revised pay scale mentioned above actaully raises the cost of a LB.
