For what it is worth I am really thinking that expanding the playoffs might be the way to go. Another option rather than the huge home field advantage would be to award a couple of points (say three) for each extra win the the higher seed had in the regular season. For example a team with a 10-4 record against a team that went 8-6 would get six points for being the higher seed.
