I do the same as Burt. I also look at the dates of the most recent posts on the home page for more recent items.

I have noticed that you don't have to "read" the posts for them to be marked as "unread." I do notice that if you come to the site and then leave the site without viewing any of the newer posts, they won't show as new when you return later.
