Off the top of my head here are two ways to get around this problem with the current rule still in place.

One: assign five years in the trade thread, be over the cap and get back under the cap within the allotted time frame by trading.

Two: if your trading partner wants five years on the contract for player X and you only have two available, you can first trade him Player Y with a three year contract. Then you assign five years to Player X, complete the original trade, and he returns to you Player Y in one more trade.

There are probably even more workarounds, but clearly this supposed purpose is not achieved. Any other guesses? What is being accomplished by requiring me to state "Celek - 2 years" and not allowing Shep to do it instead as he confirms the trade?
