Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
When you renegotiate a rookie contract, is it still considered the original rookie contract? Or are they now on their second contract?

Re: Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
I believe players are still subject to rookie bonuses regardless of original or renegotiated contract for years 2-5.

Re: Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
Ok, 10-4.
So then are they subject to bonuses if they were undrafted and signed as a FA? Also, I assume that means 2nd year players signed as FA's are never subject to bonuses? Maybe the rules just need to be updated to reflect that all drafted rookies are subject to rookie bonuses for the first 5 years of their career? |

Re: Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
If you draft them they are eligible for the bonus. If you sign them as FA then no bonus.

Re: Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
10-4. Again, appreciate the clarity.
Is there a mechanism to request we clarify the rule here in the official rules? Perhaps change: "In addition to these base salaries, rookies will earn bonuses based on their performance each year of their original rookie contract." to something like: "In addition to these base salaries, all drafted rookies will earn bonuses based on their yearly performance for the first five years of their NFL career. " For me personally, it that feels a little more clear. Thoughts? |

Re: Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
I don't have time to read all responses, so forgive me if I repeat. We had this issue come up a few years back. Bobby and I play poker, and had discussions on avoiding the rookie bonuses. So we signed some of our rookies to 2 year deals, specifically for me, LeVeon Bell. After the 1st year of his contract, I renegotiated him to 5 years, 2nd contract. Figured he would earn more in bonuses, then the 20% bump, plus 10% raise each year after that.
Well it was decided that any DRAFTED rookie, will get bonuses for his 1st 5 years under contract, if owned by same team, or traded to another team. So I was hit with both barrels. If the player is cut, then bid on later, then no rookie bonuses. Or if a rookie is not drafted, but signed as FA afterwards, then no rookie bonuses.

While working on 2020 rookie bonus project I came upon this.

If the player is cut, then bid on later, then no rookie bonuses. Or if a rookie is not drafted, but signed as FA afterwards, then no rookie bonuses. I am hoping this still applies.

Re: Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
And in researching rookie bonus for George Kittle I came upon this.
http://predsff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27850 This pick up by Pea Pods gets my vote for the best ever. Not only did he get Kittle as an UFA for the league minimum but NONE of us other 11 owners even countered nor bid on George during the rookie draft!!! What a gem!!!

Patrick notes how players were added to the teams in the App - so should be fairly easy to distinguish those drafted in 2016 and still with the same team, or traded to another team without being dropped.

Re: Rookie Contracts/Bonuses
I've finished with my written calculations and am in the process of converting it to an excel spreadsheet.
