Philadelphia Freedom is on a distinguished road
Default Draft movement

inline imageThe Philadelphia Freedom, rewarded for their struggles yet again with a high draft pick have reached an agreement to trade that pick (1.3) to division opponent (rival would indicate some sort of competitive rivalry, which does not currently exist since the Freedom could not beat the proverbial “rented mule”) the Parkwood Predators. Freedom GM Matt Marshall noted, “We had a number (read: more PM's than a ditigal clock store in the afternoon) of discussions with GM Mike SantaLucia and this seemed like the best opportunity for our team going forward.”
In return for the pick the Freedom receive TE LJ Smith, RB Marcell Shipp and the first pick in round two of the 2004 draft.

inline imageMany feel the addition of another TE is surprising (though Smith is DS eligible) since the Freedom have Jeremy Shockey who is widely considered one of the Top 5 TE’s in the game today. Marshall, a Philadelphia, resident is reportedly very high on Smith (not just high!!) and feels that he will be able to produce at a Top 10 level himself, has a long term deal and is currently very inexpensive.

Shipp provides the Freedom with their second active roster RB under contract (at a moderately priced $612). With one more year remaining on his current deal he will have the chance to impress the Freedom brass as he seeks a longer term deal. Though he is not considered a superstar he should be a solid number 2 back for the team.

The draft pick will allow the Freedom to target the best available player at the start of round two in a rather deep draft.

When asked about trading away such a high pick in a talent rich draft Marshall was quoted as saying, “This was a tough choice but in the end we felt getting back quality and quantity made this our best choice both in the short term and the long term. We also are in a position to continue dealing and hopefully we can continue to better our woebegone team.”

Editor’s note: Reporters were later heard laughing that if this team does not significantly improve Marshall could be hearing the phrase, “Wow, be gone!” from management before too long.
