The RedZone: Draft Preview- TE’s & Ks

Dateline: 4/22/05
by Linus Scrimmage and the Tank D’Season (Immortal Ramirez)

Bwahahaha!!! Yeah, that’s a good one. Drafting Kickers… tell me another one. What?!? You’re serious. This ought be good. Ok, I’ll humor you. What do you have to tell me about Kickers and TE’s. I supposed you’re going to hit me with the same stuff you’ve been shoving at me the last three weeks…in alphabetical order, so no one can read ‘too much’ into it. Wwwwwhatever.

Tight Ends:

Player Name - College (Height) Weight, 40 Time [NFL Draft Result]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
:Steelers Heath Miller - Virginia (6' 5") 256lbs, 4.65 [TE1 - 1.30 to Pittsburgh]
Great hands. Intermediate weapon. Excellent athlete. Smart and good body control. Doesn’t have premier speed or blocking. Can use some strength. If healthy should be immediate impact player.

:Buccaneer Alex Smith – Stanford (6' 4 1/8") 258lbs, 4.75 [TE2 - 3.07 to Tampa Bay]
Good size and strength. Smart player. Good hands. Needs to get stronger and better blocker. Not elite speed – may not be able to get open downfield.

:Bills Kevin Everett – Miami, FL (6' 4 5/8") 241lbs, 4.77 [TE3 - 3.22 to Buffalo]
Natural athlete with ton of potential, but is a little raw. Needs some weight and strength to help him in blocking. Needs crisper routes. Excellent body control.

Jerome Collins - Notre Dame (6' 4 1/4") 267lbs, 4.71 [TE4 - 5.08 to St. Louis]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

:Titans Bo Scaife - Texas (6' 2") 249lbs, 4.90 [TE5 - 6.05 to Tennessee]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

:Seahawks Tony Jackson - Iowa (6' 2") 264lbs [TE6 - 6.22 to Seattle]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

:Jets Joel Dressen – Colorado State (6' 4 1/4") 260lbs, 4.69 [TE7 - 6.24 to NY Jets]
Great route runner and hands. Competitor. Also long-snapper. Some injury concerns, but played through them.

:49ers Patrick Estes - Virginia (6' 6") 268lbs, 4.79 [TE8 - 7.34 to San Francisco]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

:49ers Billy Bajema - Oklahoma State (6' 5") 261lbs, 4.80 [TE9 - 7.35 to San Francisco]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

atriots Andy Stokes - William Penn (6' 5") 245lbs, 4.75 [TE10 - 7.41 (Mr. Irrelevant) to New England]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

UNDRAFTED TE's
------------------------------------------------------

Adam Bergen - Lehigh (6' 4 3/8") 265lbs, 4.65
Decent size and speed. Needs to get stronger for blocking, but can spread the field. Sleeper potential.

Garrett Cross - California (6' 4 3/8") 245lbs, 4.86
Good end zone threat in college. Needs to put on some weight to be a productive blocker. Productive player we good height.

Steve Fleming - Arizona (6' 4 1/2") 267lbs, 4.74
Natural receiver with good hands and routes. Needs to get stronger and block better. Not great speed to get down field.

Alex Holmes - USC (6' 1 3/4") 265lbs, 4.75
Not a ton of height, but great blocker. Good hands. Injury issues and can’t spread the field.

Dave Kashetta – Boston College (6' 3 3/8") 247lbs, 4.91
Gives 100%. Long-snapper as well. Very physical and aggressive blocker. Poor speed. Not as big as NFL generally likes.

Cody McCarty - TCU (6' 4") 250lbs, 4.95
Good size. Good hands. Excellent frame and ability to put on strength and weight. Intermediate threat. Lacks speed. Needs to work on technique

Kickers:

Player Name - College (Height) Weight, 40 Time
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
:Jets Mike Nugent - Ohio State (5' 9 5/8") 182lbs, 4.7 [K1 - 2.15 to NY Jets]
Excellent leg strength (50+). Accurate in clutch. Kicks off as well. Size may be factor. Excellent talent.

:Colts Dave Rayner - Michigan State (6' 2") 210lbs, 5.0 [K2 - 6.28 to Indianapolis]
Big distance kicker (55+). Excellent Strength. Needs work on clutch kicking.

:Broncos Paul Ernster - Northern Arizona (6' 0") 217lbs [K3 - 7.25 to Denver]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

UNDRAFTED K's
------------------------------------------------------

Tyler Jones - Boise State (6' 3/4") 201lbs, 5.10
Consistent with solid leg (50+). A little older from not entering right to college. Solid prospect. Also kicks off.

Rhys Lloyd - Minnesota (6' 1") 220lbs, 4.90
Clutch kicker. 50+ distance leg. Also kicks off. Only concerns is attitude (not taking things seriously).

Jonathan Nichols - Ole Miss (6' 0") 180lbs, 5.15
Great leg strength. Also kicks off. Missed some clutch kicks, in pressure situation. Tons of upside. If with right coach, can succeed. A little small too.

Nick Novak - Maryland (5' 11 1/2") 191lbs, 5.10
Excellent inside the 40, but loses accuracy outside the 40. With right coach, can succeed.

Joe Rheem - Kansas State (6' 1/4") 217lbs, 5.10
Excellent kicker inside 40. Needs to work on leg strength (though improved in last year).

** Sorry, there aren’t 10 prospects this year…only seven.

Article updated to reflect the results of the 2005 NFL Draft. Players have been marked with who they were picked by, and at what pick. All players have also been re-sorted by when they were selected.
