The person that championed and managed the current 4x2x2 IR system is no longer in the league, and it's clearly hated by most teams.

In light of that, can I propose that we make IR easier to manage? I personally HATE the 4 week minimum and couldn't care less if a player is stashed there all season as frankly, with only 2 IR spots, stashing a player just just not that valuable IMO, especially when the injury bug hits your team).

What I'd like to see is a 1 week minimum and no max weeks. ie. if you put an eligible player on IR, they're out that week and can be activated anytime thereafter, but there is no requirement to activate. If you want to make it harder to put a player on IR, require that they be listed as OUT instead of Questionable.

Thoughts?

I could go for the one week minimum stay...I would leave the qualifier as is. Good example of how this would help me cowboys.. Zeke out one week.. Use Pollard one week.. Bring Zeke back.. Have room to adjust for the short term things

I don't mind the 1 week stay, but still think we need to remove the Questionable designation as an allowable IR player. If a player misses a practice as a day off, they are listed as questionable. I think we need to limit it to a designation of Doubtful, Out, or IR.

There is no Doubtful designation anymore, just Questionable, Out or IR, which is why we went with Questionable as the minimum requirement.

I would be good with a Designation of 'Out' as the minimum requirement.

I don't mind a Questionable tag as it typically gives a team more time to make moves or decisions especially since most Out designation tend to occur Sunday mornings.

Anyone open to discussing REMOVING the contract years limit on the Taxi Squad? It's pretty limiting when developing talent and having only 20 years to devote to 5 players.

I'd be all for removing it!, I never really understood why it was in place

I don't recall the thought process TBH (feeling OLD)!

However, after 15+ years I wonder each off-season why it's still in place. Giving rookies 5 year deals has pros and cons. Pros for development, but cons for promoting to active roster as THAT is where having too many players on long term deals becomes limiting (trust me it's inhibited my own moves over the past few seasons). With the active roster contract max already placing limits on teams, I think the limit on the TS is duplicative and not necessary. At least in recent years that's how I've been thinking. 15+ years ago I probably felt differently!

Unrelated to the discussion on TS contract years, the NFL has moved to an 18 week 17 game season with just 3 pre-season games, which is cause for discussion. The matter has been brought up in SACD and I'd request that owners only in Frenzy read the linked thread and post your thoughts here.

Why not eliminate years completely until moving players to active roster? Only when you move a player to active do you assign years. Contract then becomes guarenteed like current rule.

That's an interesting twist to consider.

My gut reaction was, "NO WAY!" Then (literally 3 seconds later)... I started thinking... PRACTICE SQUAD is precisely for letting talent develop. Much of the time, it takes a good 3 years for a PS player to get ready for prime time. By then he only has 1-2 years left on his contract. So much for being an impact on the team. I kind of like this... it allows flexibility for owners to look at their current rosters and evaluate the long-term talent a PS player has for them. I'm completely in on this idea, Burt! Awesome.

Since you are still limited by number of slots, I do not think it will give anyone unfair advantage. Just gives time to develop those guys who are slower to come into their own (Jimmy Garrapolo) , or are hindered by injuries (Paris Campbell, Dallas Goedert)

So what would be the new rules for the TS (and PS).
When drafted, no contract years would be required.
Contract years would be assigned when a player is moved to the Active Roster.

I agree that this would not give anyone an unfair advantage. It would be good to be able to see players develop, then be able to use their talents for more than a year or two. But we would probably want to clarify how the rule change would impact the other areas of the current TS/PS rules.

A drafted player could stay on TS or PS indefinitely - only need to be cut if space is needed - OR - would there still be a limited number of years the player could remain on the TS/PS?
Can you hold a player on TS for a few years then assign a full 5 yr rookie contract when moving to Active Roster.
When assigned to the Active Roster, would that be considered the start of his Rookie Contract (impact on Rookie Bonuses) or would the Rookie Bonus still hit the TS/PS player, as it does now?
How would this impact eligibility for moving a player from Active Roster back to TS?

I don't think any other rule would be impacted...there would not be a years cap on the TS..once you move a player to Active, you assign years..the contract then becomes guaranteed. You can still move the player back to TS, with salary penalty added, but now years will count down as they would on active.

Yes, some late bloomers maybe be held for several extra years over standard 5 year contract, but the owner would also have to burn that slot those extra years on one of the rookie squads...

I really only seeing this happen rarely.

But yes, some owners who have room, could delay a player moving up, and keep him for several extra years...

Salaries would still increase each year as usual. Rookie bonuses also would apply. Keep rookie bonuses being applied for 1st 5 contract years still, unless cut by drafting team, and signed to new contract by different team.

Actually, I was thinking no years assigned to PS players only. But TS would still have to have them. PS players rarely make it into ACTIVE status as is. So that's not much of a switch. Allowing TS players not to have contract years... hmm... not so sure about that. Change my mind.

What about being able to decide where we place players. Either on TS or PS from any draft position. Right now it's designated by round, however some players, especially tight ends tend to take much longer to develop. If I select one in the second round, he sits there for 3 seasons, and then I cut him from the TS just to see him start to get used. Thoughts?
