While I agree this was not the best use of cap space, saying Rice is an awesome talent??? He's fast...that's it. So far he's run marginal routes, shown lapses in concentration, and has questionable hands. While he may indeed develop into a top receiver, that's ridiculous to make that claim with what we've seen so far. As far as Bobby Wade being a great slot receiver, no. He's been adequate. Unless Minn changes their offensive philosophy to favor the slot, they get a QB who can complete 60% of his passes, and Wade can stay healthy for a season, then he's waiver fodder.

When wade is used effectively, he can be a great slot receiver. He's never even really had a great QB yet. He was stuck in Chicago, moved to Tennessee where he did very well though his QB was a freaking rookie, and went to Minnesota to get thrown the ball by Tarvaris Jackson.

And I stand by my Rice statement. He's a rookie. Most rookies run average routes and struggle with concentration over a full season. Let the guy grow into the position. He will be a phenomenal receiver, imo.

Rice is a great talent. Much better than Berrian ever will be IMO. Behind Bowe and CJ , Rice looks to be the 3rd best WR from last years crop.

I agree that anyone who thinks a rookie is going to enter the league looking like a vet is fooling themself, but he has to at least demonstrate some of that potential. Rice didn't other than speed. If you wanted to say that about Calvin Johnson (I know, major news flash there), then you'd be justified based on his performance as a rookie. Sidney's wasn't in the top 5 for rookie wideouts, so I think you're exaggerating when you make such lofty claims based on what we've seen.

With Wade, the term "great" is an overstatement. Great players overcome adversity like you described to still have stand out performances in spite of the obstacles. Look at Wes Welker the past couple of years in Miami. Are you saying they had a better O-line than Chicago? A better QB than Tennessee? You MIGHT be able to argue they had better receivers than Tennessee, but it wasn't by much and I'll take Jeff Fisher over Cam Cameron and Nick Saban every day of the week.

I guess my point is that you're getting carried away with a guy's potential vs. actual performance. It's all well and good to claim a guy's future greatness, but at least have some facts to back it up in addition to what amounts to "I think."

I'm not saying Bobby Wade is anything other than a great slot receiver. He would fail miserably in the number 1 or 2 role. But if you have two other good receivers, and slide him into the slot, I think he'll be great there.

I know he'll never be a great overall WR. But in the slot, he's very good, and potentially great.

I am not saying Berrian is going to be a WR#1 but then again he is not being paid like one either. With the spiraling cost of WR's this year I think $1,750 is more than fair for a guy who will likely match last year's numbers of about 150 FF points as a floor (considering the Bears QB's are not likely to be in the HOF).

Also, with Fitz and Marshall signed for less $2500 for 2008 the money was there to secure a guy that can be a WR#3 (unless Reggie Brown emerges to claim the WR#3 spot). Heck Fitz, Marshall and Berrian are barely costing more than than CJ just sold for.
