The RedZone: Draft Preview- QB’s

Dateline: 4/02/05
by Linus Scrimmage and Tank D'Season

There is some good healthy debate about who the top QB is in this draft. Here we will look at 15 (sorted alphabetically) that could make an impact over time.

Player Name - College (Height) Weight, 40 Time [NFL Draft Result]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
:49ers Alex Smith - Utah (6' 4 1/8") 217lbs,4.75 [QB1 - 1.01 to San Francisco]
Another guy who could be a product of his offensive system but with his smarts, accuracy and speed should be a franchise type QB. Gaining weight will help him (as long as it does not detract from his speed) and his upside is as good as any QB in the draft.

Aaron Rodgers - California (6' 2") 223lbs,4.71 [QB2 - 1.24 to Green Bay]
Size is a concern but at 6’2” he should have enough size to go with excellent mechanics to be a Top 5 pick. Enough speed to keep teams honest and working with Jeff Tedford certainly does not hurt his passing skills.

:Redskins Jason Campbell - Auburn (6' 4 3/4") 230lbs, 4.85 [QB3 - 1.25 to Washington]
Like Anderson has the size and arm plus he can scramble a bit. Really came on strong as a senior and could be a day one type of player.

:Browns Charlie Frye - Akron (6' 3 7/8") 225lbs,4.82 [QB4 - 3.03 to Cleveland]
Another MAC QB looking to make the jump. Has height but probably needs to bulk up a bit. Good leader but arm strength is questionable.

:Raiders Andrew Walter - Arizona St. (6' 6 1/8") 233lbs,4.85 [QB5 - 3.05 to Oakland]
Good size and arm strength but seemed to regress during his junior year. Senior year helped to raise his stock and now only injury concerns would keep out of the Day 1 mix.

:Seahawks David Greene - Georgia (6' 3 1/2") 226lbs, 4.81 [QB6 - 3.21 to Seattle]
Excellent intangibles (sort of like winning Miss Congeniality at a beauty pageant) and decent speed make him another day two developmental player.

Kyle Orton - Purdue (6' 4") 233lbs,5.10 [QB7 - 4.05 to Chicago]
Was he a product of his offense in college? Some say not and feel he is better than Drew Brees at the same stage of his career. Strong arm and accuracy plus top competition could make him an interesting day one pick for a team looking to groom a starting NFL QB.

Stefan LeFors - Louisville (6' 1/8") 208lbs, 4.53 [QB8 - 4.21 to Carolina]
Great speed but unfortunately he is a bit smaller than most team would want. Could develop into a Doug Flutie type player.

Dan Orlovsky - Connecticut (6' 5") 225lbs, 4.95 [QB9 - 5.09 to Detroit]
Could be an NFL starter and was definitely a huge part of UConn emergence at the 1A level. Has good and a decent arm but as a classic drop back passer could be vulnerable to some crushing hits.

Adrian McPherson - Florida St. (6' 3 1/2") 218lbs, 4.69 [QB10 - 5.16 to New Orleans]
Fantastic athlete (was Mr. Footballl and Mr. Basketball as a high senior in Florida) with off the field concerns in his past. Big upside with similar downside potential.

:Ravens Derek Anderson - Oregon St. (6' 6 1/8") 242lbs, 5.09 [QB11 - 6.39 to Baltimore]
Has the size and the arm to make all the throws but seems to be a disappointment in terms of results. Probably a lower round prospect that could be groomed for the future if he works with the right QB coach.

:Chiefs James Killian - Tulsa [QB12 - 7.15 to Kansas City]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

atriots Matt Cassell - Southern California [QB13 - 7.16 to New England]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

:Rams Ryan Fitzpatrick - Harvard (6' 2 3/8") 232lbs, 4.87 [QB14 - 7.36 to St. Louis]
Ivy Leaguer who aced the Wonderlic test. Probably not a day one guy but could develop into a very strong back-up in the NFL.

UNDRAFTED QB's
------------------------------------------------------

Gino Guidugli - Cincinnat (6' 3 3/4") 229lbs, 5.00
Strong arm and decent size. Something like Anderson in that he never seemed to break through based on the amount of time he played. Day two seems to be where he will go.

Bryan Randall - Virginia Tech (6' 1/4") 225lbs,4.68
Good speed and accurate in the short passing game but struggles with the deep ball and lacks size. This is the kind of player I would love to see a team draft and then go for two after every TD with him as the QB.

Walter Washington - Temple (5' 11 3/4") 240lbs,4.90
I can’t see him as a QB at the NFL level (unless someone adopts my 2 point plan mentioned above). He has the size to be a short yardage RB and I could see him getting time their as long as he shows he can pick up the blitz.

Jason White - Oklahoma (6' 2 1/2") 223lbs,4.90
Played in a lot of big games (and won most of them) but his injuries are a major concern. Could be a solid day 2 guy to develop as your back-up.

Article updated to reflect the results of the 2005 NFL Draft. Players have been marked with who they were picked by, and at what pick. All players have also been re-sorted by when they were selected.
