The RedZone: Draft Preview- RB’s

Dateline: 4/08/05
by Linus Scrimmage and the Tank D’Season (Immortal Ramirez)

RB’s R Us. We have a lot to work with. There’s the “Big 3” if you’re looking at accounting firms as well as RBs. But the rest of the field is pretty deep with potential. Here we will look at 30 (sorted alphabetically) that could make an impact over time.

Player Name - College (Height) Weight, 40 Time [NFL Draft Result]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
:dolphins Ronnie Brown - Auburn (6' 1/4") 233lbs, 4.44 [RB1 - 1.02 to Miami]
Went back for his senior year, even with potential to be 1st rounder last year. All around excellent back and team player. Has the intangibles and skills to make it in the pros. One of the top three RBs on the board.

:Bears Cedric Benson - Texas (5' 10 1/2") 222lbs, 4.51 [RB2 - 1.04 to Chicago]
Benson has been a top collegiate producer, following his idol (the infamous) Ricky Williams. Benson’s power and skills will make him one of the top RBs taken off the board. Excellent skills for the NFL, though some are concerned about him being tackled by first contact.

:Buccaneer Carnell Williams - Auburn (5' 10 7/8") 217lbs, 4.45 [RB3 - 1.05 to Tampa Bay]
One of the big three RBs. Has all the makings of a great RB in the NFL. Needs to work on blocking and a size and injuries are minor concerns. Overall excellent pick.

:Cardinals JJ Arrington - California (5' 9") 214lbs, 4.45 [RB4 - 2.12 to Arizona]
Arrington set Pac 10 records as a senior, but needs some refinements. Has good instincts, but needs to work on skills (blocking, route running). Probably a middle- round prospect that could be groomed for the future if he works with the right RB coach.

anthers Eric Shelton - Louisville (6' 1 1/2") 246lbs, 4.59 [RB5 - 2.22 to Carolina]
Great size and speed combination. Split carries at college. Ability to break away. Potential goal line back.

:49ers Frank Gore - Miami (5' 9 3/8") 217lbs, 4.65 [RB6 - 3.01 to San Francisco]
Strong inside runner with explosive power inside and great natural instincts. Greatest drawback is durability with two major knee surgeries. Coming out of college early to take shot at NFL rather than risk another injury at college and end career.

:Texans Vernand Morency - Oklahoma St (5' 9 5/8") 212lbs, 4.66 [RB7 - 3.09 to Houston]
Explosive runner with both size and speed. Several 200+ yard games in college. Raw and needs developed. Huge potential if aligned with right RB coach.

:Eagles Ryan Moats - Louisiana Tech (5' 8 1/4") 210lbs, 4.49 [RB8 - 3.13 to Philadelphia]
Threat to go all the way any time he touches the ball. Quick and shifty. Lacks size and has nagging injuries. May be limited in NFL due to his size.

:Broncos Maurice Clarett - formerly Ohio State (5' 11 5/8") 234lbs, 4.75 [RB9 - 3.38 to Denver]
Boom or bust player. Showed great flashes of skills, but has injury and maturity issues. Hasn’t played football in two years.

Marion Barber - Minnesota (5' 11 3/8") 221lbs, 4.49 [RB10 - 4.08 to Dallas]
Classic north/south runner, Barber has good strength and power to hit holes. A little light for the NFL full-back, but may be change of pass back.

Brandon Jacobs - Southern Illinois (6' 4 1/4") 267lbs, 4.59 [RB11 - 4.09 to NY Giants]
Also deemed as a ‘tweener’ Jacobs has excellent combination of size and speed. Excellent producer when he as played. Transferred after Brown and Williams decided to return to Auburn for Senior year. Strong potential.

Ciatrick Fason - Florida (6' 3/4") 207lbs, 4.60 [RB12 - 4.11 to Minnesota]
Underperformer until 2004. Has great potential and raw skills. Once touted as best H.S. RB in country. Has excellent combination size and speed.

Manuel White - UCLA (6' 2") 239lbs [RB13 - 4.19 to Washington]
No writeup from Linus or Tank... projected as a FB.

Alvin Pearman - Virginia (5' 9 3/8") 208lbs, 4.65 [RB14 - 4.26 to Jacksonville]
Great heart and excellent receiver out of backfield. Size is conern. Lacks blazing speed for size. Limited potential at next level.

Darren Sproles - Kansas St. (5' 6 1/8") 187lbs, 4.50 [RB15 - 4.29 to San Diego]
Very tough for size, great intangibles. Speed and elusiveness. Lacks size and blocking ability. If six inches taller and 40 lbs heavier, could be #1 RB on board. As is, potential 3rd down back in NFL.

Damien Nash - Missouri (5' 9 5/8") 218lbs, 4.57 [RB16 - 5.06 to Tennessee]
Huge potential and skills, but limited experience. Also quit team.

Justin Green - Montana (5' 11") 250lbs [RB17 - 5.22 to Baltimore]
No writeup from Linus or Tank... projected as a FB.

:Jets Cedric Houston - Tennessee (5' 10 3/4") 225lbs, 4.5 [RB18 - 6.08 to NY Jets]
Ton of natural ability and strength that hasn’t lived up to potential. Also injury plagued collegiate career. If he can stay healthy, is a very solid RB.

:Falcons DeAndre Cobb - Michigan State (5' 9 3/4") 196lbs, 4.48 [RB19 - 6.27 to Atlanta]
Has size questions. Will be a lower ranked pick as potential change of pace or scat back.

:Buccaneer Rick Razzano - Mississippi [RB20 - 7.07 to Tampa Bay]
No writeup from Linus or Tank.

:Redskins Nehemiah Broughton - The Citadel (5' 11 1/2") 250lbs, 4.55 [RB21 - 7.08 to Washington]
Power runner who could be a steal on day two of draft. Exceptional skills but not tested against elite opponents.

:Bills Lionel Gates - Louisville (5' 11 5/8") 222lbs, 4.68 [RB22 - 7.22 to Buffalo]
One of Three RBs at Louisville. Does everything well, but nothing great. Solid runner and good inside instincts.

:Colts Anthony Davis - Wisconsin (5' 6 5/8") 200lbs, 4.45 [RB23 - 7.29 to Indianapolis]
Size and durability questions, but explosive runner with good vision. When he did play, racked up some good numbers.

:Steelers Noah Herron - Northwestern (5' 11") 224lbs, 4.68 [RB24 - 7.30 to Pittsburgh]
Deemed as a ‘tweener’ between RB & FB, punishes defenders. Has good hands and strong running. Lacks speed and explosiveness.

:Rams Madison Hedgecock - North Carolina (6' 3") 266lbs, 4.87 [RB25 - 7.37 to St. Louis]
No writeup from Linus or Tank. Projected to be a FB.

UNDRAFTED RB's
------------------------------------------------------

Decori Birmingham - Arkansas (5' 9 3/4") 210lbs, 4.58
Birmingham is a converted WR. Has some raw talent, but will be a lower round pick.

Ryan Grant - Notre Dame (6' 1 1/8") 215lbs, 4.53
Hits hole decisively and has good vision, but lacks other skills. Also minor injury concern. Was not primary back at college.

Kay-Jay Harris - West Virginia (6' 3/8") 243lbs, 4.56
Excellent size and strength. Very fast for size. Eddie George style runner that opens himself up to big hits (not elusive). Has injury concerns as well because of running style.

Alex Haynes - Central Florida (5' 9 7/8") 223lbs, 4.55
Good size and power. Runs hard with power. Isn’t explosive. Like Lionel Gates, does a lot well, but nothing great.

Ray Hudson - Alabama (5' 9 3/4") 192lbs, 4.5
Injury in senior year lowered value. Fast and decisive runner. Doesn’t run inside well.

TA McLendon - North Carolina St (5' 10 1/4") 235lbs, 4.63
Excellent skills all the way around, but due to running high (like Eddie George), TA can’t seem to stay healthy. Good intangibles as well.

Bobby Purify - Colorado (6' 3/8") 210lbs, 4.70
Good receiver, size and vision. Speed is lacking and durability is a concern. Needs to bulk up some more since speed isn’t there.

Walter Reyers - Syracuse (5' 10") 209lbs, 4.66
Excellent burst. Good hands. Great moves and hard to tackle. Size is concern and had lack-luster senior year, so motivation a question.

Marvin Townes - East Carolina (6' 0") 200lbs, 4.66
Hits holes decisively with good vision. Quick runner. Isn’t physical or tough enough. Lacks aggression in running.
