Bloodsuckers Take Illinois RB at #2
RB Rashard Mendenhall to Bloodsuckers
AP BAY AREA, CA - With RB Darren McFadden off the board the Bloodsuckers (suprise, suprise) added another running back to an already crowded backfield. On a roster with RB Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Brandon Jacobs, Micheal Turner, and Ernest Graham all on the active roster and with all but Lewis with multi-year contracts the Bloodsucker's added the RB they felt had the best long-term prospects, RB Rashard Mendenhall. Mendenhall is a junior that possess great power, agility, and break tackle ability. Coupled with his durability, solid hands, great work ethic, and no character concerns Mendenhall seems to be all that you want in a franchise back. It is a bit of a suprise as most draft drankings have RB Jonathan Stewart wrestling with Darren McFadden for the #1 spot. However, both have their issues: with McFadden it is his ability to break tackles and off-the field issues and with Stewart it is his ability to stay healthy while running in a bruising manner. GM Frank Alonzo was asked to explain choosing Mendenhall over Stewart. "We just liked Mendenhall a whole lot more. If you look at the combine numbers they performed fairly similiar - ran in the 4.4 and benched pressed over 20 reps. However, when you watch game film Mendenhall jumps out and is much more explosive and agile than Stewart. Also, Mendenhall has be durable player and doesn't have the injury issue that Stewart has." Now that he is selected the question is how will he be utilized in such a crowded backfield with runners who were fairly effective last year. "He'll be expected to go out there and compete. He is only 20 years old and has only had 1 full year as the featured back. He'll learn a lot from competing with the veterans. The great thing about that is he's in no pressure to contribute right away and by the time he is ready to take over in a year or two, if not sooner we have the methods to keep him for his entire career." The Bloodsuckers are known for thier love of RBs and adding Mendenhall only strengthens that idea, but what did the rookie have to say about the team that drafted him. "I love the team and I know we're going to turn it around this year. They added Jamal Lewis and Graham in the off-season and those are two vets that know how to survive in this league. I'm looking forward to learning from them and pushing myself for that starting spot. Plus with Moss, Steve Smith, and Lee Evans no way teams can stack the box!" They say threes a company and fours a crowd, let's see how 6 RBs works out.
