Two Starters and Backup QB Axed
BAY AREA AP In a stunning move right before the eve of training camp, the Bloodsuckers have released LB Keith Bullock, WR Keary Colbert, and QB Kyle Boller from the team. The move is stunning the league as the 'Suckers looked to have assembled a complete team and were looking to add depth with the 200 plus cyberbucks they had left. However, today the team released two starters, LB Keith Bullock and WR Keary Colbert. Bullock is one of the top fantasy LB in the league and was expected to anchor the teams defense after fellow superstar Julius Peppers was cut. Second year WR Keary Colbert was to learn behind Holt and Burelson as the teams 3rd WR but with Amani Toomer, Samie Parker, and Terry Glenn he became expendable. Kyle Boller was to be the understudy to Kerry Collins. It is suprising considering the timings of these cuts. Sure the Insects freed up over 2000 cbs of capspace but they lost an defensive stud and yound WR and QB. Who they plan to sign at this point in time is unknown, however there have been grumblings that the team is willing to have Bullock back at a reduced salary. After numerous calls GM Frank Alonzo finally responded to the reports. "The timing of the cuts are unfourtunate but we're looking to build a team here. A team not just for the upcoming season but for future seasons. After some failed plans and being out of free agency for three weeks after signing four starting runningbacks we are changing plans." He continued in his statement, "We decided to shift away from having two or three studs on defense and we're looking to build a defense where everyone does their job. It's not to say we wouldn't love to have Keith back but at 1275 we felt that money coud be better spent elsewhere, especially considering the make up of the team." When asked about Colbert and Boller's chances of returning Frank said, "We signed them in the first place for a reason, we believe they can play. However I'm not too sure Keary can give us twice the numbers Amani will to justify his nearly doubled salary. As for Boller he's a fine young QB but with some of the other guys out there, we're gonna let him go in hopes of finding another team." He then summed up the clubs action, "We cut three great players and we'd love to have them back. But this is a business and we have a chance to maximize the buck, so we'll try it." With these cuts the Insects stand at 2,248cbs under the 20,000 cb cap limit and with 732cbs of dead money. They have met all the roster requirements so it seems as if all the capspace will be used to signing depth. The Gunslingers have the next biggest cap deficit at 1130 cbs, with the 36 Chambers following at 1080. After these three teams no other team has over 500 cbs with only 3 teams having more than 300. So barring an future cuts it seems as if the Insects are in a powerful position with future free agents.
