Scorpians really put the sting to me on this one. In my defense the real Bounty Hunter (my dog) forced the issue on this. He reasoned we needed the cap space for FA's and that we probably couldn't get a back up TE in FA at that price . We'll see.

I thought you could only reneg on two years deals (or one year deals if the player was acquired via trade). Did this change or have I always been under the wrong impression?

You have been under the wrong impression Matt - at least my understanding is you can only renegotiate a player with 1 year or less remaining if he is traded..all other players can be renegotiated at any time you want...most people wait until last year of eligibility, since it makes no sense otherwise...

"Players with more than one year remaining on their contract can have their contracts renegotiated by the team holding their rights. When a contract is renegotiated, the current years salary gets a 10% or 300cb raise, whichever is greater, and the contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years.

A player with less than one year remaining on his contract can only have his contract renegotiated if he is traded to another team. Once traded, the contract can be renegotiated with a raise of 5% or 150cb to the current year salary, whichever is greater. The contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years."

This is another incorrect RENEG.

Royal has a 3 year deal so he is only eligible for the 300/15% cb raise, not 150/5%.

So if you reneged him it would be for 851/5yrs. However, since he has 3 years the smartest thing to do is to reneg him when his contract is down to 2 years.

Burt's correct you can reneg more than 2 years if you hold the rights to the player BUT they can only receive the 300/10% raise NOT the 150/5%.

However there is no advantage to renegotiating a player who has more than 2 years as it would increase the cost of the player unnecessarily. Dale coulld and should hold off the reneging of Royal until after the 2011 season, but before the 2012 season roll over so that he gets another 2 years on a cheaper salary (2010 - 3 yrs, 2011 2 yrs).

That's why you may have never seen a reneg take place with a contract longer than 2 years.
