After all of what the New Orleans area went through it was hoped that it would not come to this. However, it was announced today that the Freedom would be severing ties with RB Duece McCallister.
McCallister was one of the first players to join the Freedom and after he was traded for a first round pick he was re-acquired. Unfortunately, he will be returning from an injury and would have eaten up over $3,100 for the 2006 season. The Freedom have opted to cut him during the soft cap period and take $450 hit in 2005 (covered by the money freed up when he was cut) and $450 hit in the 2006 season.
Freedom owner Matt Marshall stated that with a first round tendered RB costing $2,400 (at minimum) it was hard to justify keeping McCallister around with such a high cap number. It was noted that the team may attempt to resign McCallister in the unrestircted free agent signing period if he is not claimed off of waivers by another team.
