Thumbs down Cut WR Michael Floyd, AZ (546/2)

Making room for Washington. Underperforming WR, not worth his current contract for my team. Irish fans, feel free to make a claim, though!

Are claims still allowed during playoffs? Seems to go against the one year deal thing?

I thought we discussed this and put it up for a vote last year.

I still think that if a player is cut, no matter when, everyone should have the right to claim said player. Floyd has a two year contract, so why should playoff teams be the only ones allowed to claim him? Also a team could take advantage and cut a multi-year player in the playoffs to prevent someone from claiming him that way the cutting team would still be able to acquire the player in UFA next season.

To me it seems logical that anyone should be able to claim a cut player no matter when the player is cut.

We did have somewhat of a discussion:
http://www.predsff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21269

And a vote, which did not get enough votes to pass:
http://www.predsff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21303

So we still do not allow claims on players cut during playoffs by non-playoff teams.

But the rules also state:
"Any players acquired by playoff teams between weeks 14 and 17 may only be assigned 1 year contracts and CANNOT be declared as RFA's the following season."

So even though Floyd has 2 year deal, a claim would reduce that to 1 year, and that player is gone at season end from playoff teams roster.

"acquired" does not equal "claimed"

acquired is via free agency

Actually there is nowhere in the Waiver Wire section of the rules that states a beginning or end to claims. The only thing it defines is the time period that a player is available on the waiver wire.

I can see your point Pat, about dumping players who cannot be claimed, to try to get them as UFA's the next year cheaper.
But I also see the point of not allowing to be claimed, since players are being dropped to make room for players acquired via playoff FA.

I think precedence was set last year to not allow non playoff teams to claim players being dropped during the playoffs. I am not on Rules committee (At least I don;t think I am) - so I think we need to hear from the Commish and the board.

I've got a funeral to lead today. Won't be able to research the posts from last year until later. Sorry. Maybe Mike can weigh in, in the meantime.

Okay... squeezed some time in to reread last year's discussion. I still have my personal opinion (any player WAIVED during playoffs can be claimed by any team in the league - even non-playoff teams)... but since we didn't get enough votes last season to change the rule, we have to abide by the current wording. Only playoff teams can engage in changing their rosters. But this is clearly an unfair advantage for playoff teams, exactly in this scenario this year.

I guess I'll be re-submitting this rule change in the off-season for another vote (we had 4 teams NOT vote last year).

How did I vote last year? Wondering.

I would think that circumstances like this should be handled one of 2 ways.

1 - Any waived player is eligible to be claimed by all teams

or

2 - Any waived player is ineligible to be claimed by ANY team

I'm fine with either of the above, but opening waived players just for playoff teams is IMO an unfair advantage.

Yep. I agree.
Option 1 makes the most sense.
It's a WAIVER CLAIM... it's not a new FA acquisition.
If someone cuts a player for whatever reason, ALL TEAMS should have an equal right to make a claim on that person, regardless of their postseason status.
The one-year rule is ONLY connected to FA pick ups, as playoff teams are the only teams allowed to bid on these players.

I honestly don't know why this isn't a common sense rule.
But we have our rules... so I'll try again this off season.

So invoke the following rule, and deal with voting in the offseason:

14D. Rules Interpretation/Oversight

The Rules Committee will also interpret rules and make necessary adjustments to the existing rules as needed.
=====================================

Seems fairest to not allow anyone to make waiver claims during playoffs. Then the player can be bid on by playoff teams if they desire, and 1 year contracts can be assigned as I am thinking was the rules intent.

Great point, Burt. That will allow a playoff team to use him for the post season... but them put him back in the FA market in the off-season for EVERY NOTRE DAME FAN (I mean, "every Frenzy owner") to bid on.

So be it.
