Our rules do not allow for Suspended players to be placed on IR, unless that has changed, although I am not finding anything that shows this being done...this was asked in the past, but only one response from Mutts:
http://www.predsff.com/forums/showth...ight=suspended Here is rule: Each team has a maximum of two (2) injured reserve slots. For a player to be put on IR he must be listed as Questionable, Doubtful or Out on any NFL.com weekly injury reports. Any player placed on IR must remain on IR for a minimum of 4 weeks. By the start of the next rookie draft, each franchise must clear IR and have no more than sixteen players on their roster. Once a player is placed on IR, the club can pick up another player but they must go through the free agent channel as with any other pick up. Jackson is not listed on this weeks injury report - so looks like you need to free up some room elsewhere

The question was fielded to me last week... I said I don't think we've ever had that situation before. If a player is listed as "OUT" for any reason on the weekly report, then he'd qualify (as strange as that would be). But if there is no listing for Jackson... then it probably doesn't comply with the letter of the law.

Just checked NFL.COM... no mention of Jackson. The Footballguys.com "official injury report" will come out today, too... so there's another place to look. Otherwise, maybe suspended players are handled differently by the NFL.

I disagree that the rule is defined in broad terms, in that is states specifically Questionable, Doubtful or Out on the injury report on NFL.com - Jackson is not listed at all.
I have no problem including Suspended players, but the rule is specific, and not sure we should start going against a specific rule without league approval. My thoughts at least.

I don’t disagree with any of that, Burt is 100% correct. I am only pointing out that the rule seems to be designed to allow owners broad leeway to open up roster spots (at a cost) when there is even a decent likelihood that a player won’t be available for a given week.
When we had the taxi-squad-eligbility fiasco, it was emphatically stated that the letter of the rules is irrelevant, when it contradicts the spirit. I absolutely agree with that approach - which is why I am trying to demonstrate what the spirit of the rules appears to be, but I may be wrong – in which case, I will cut right away. (Side note – I do think suspension is legit IR reason, but a change we need to consider is to modify the language that says “listed on any injury report”. If, for example, Maroney is “Questionable” in the week 2 report, the current language would allow me to place him on IR in Week 10 – and that doesn’t make sense to me. There has to be some statue of limitations.) |

All good points Mike - I do agree that suspended players should be considered - seems to fit in with spirit of the rule...and I was not able to find precedence for this, other than the post I made above, which was not answered by the commish...
So whichever way Jim wants to go, I am ok with....I just wanted to point out what the rules currently state.... Man, we have had a lot of rule interpretation discussions this year...I guess we ended up with some awesome new owners for this league!! How does the NFL handle a player on IR vs Suspended player, as far as roster spots are concerned?

I guess this is what the nfl has come to, now that players are being suspended, we need to update the rules to include Suspended, as i agree with burt, the statuses are pretty specific. Technically in the NFL a suspended player does not coutn agasint that teams roster, once that player comes back, the NFL team has to make a roster cut to now activate the player. So i would also agree with Reds that the spirit of the rule includes a player out on IR, so Suspended would be similar if not hte same status as if a player is Out. So in a nut shell, this could go either way.
1. do we apply the letter of the rule, or the spirit of the rule. |

I would agree it's a matter of spirit vs letter and would be in favor of amending the rules and in this instance to include suspended players since they don't count on the NFL roster either.
Under Taglkakhsjkhskjhs this wasn't an issue, but under Goodell we need to think deal with suspensions.

Burt... you're right... there is NO PRECEDENCE for this.
My heart says go with the "spirit" of the rule, rather than the letter. I was interested in seeing whether or not he'd be listed on the injury report as "OUT." But if suspended players aren't "officially" on the 53-man roster, then they wouldn't be listed. I'm inclined to allow this IR designation... and to ask that we take a league vote as to amending the IR designation to include suspended NFL players. Note: Our 4-game rule would still apply, however. Once a player goes on the IR, for whichever reason, he has to remain there a minimum of 4 games before being eligible for reactivation. I'll post a poll. |

Sorry Mike. Looks like I had a premature ruling. If it was just VJax, I might have been able to make an executive decision and let it slide. But with Big Ben possibly moving to IR, and the poll not being unanimous, this rule change is doomed to be "tabled" until the off-season.
I take it that Maroney's cut will make room for VJax to stay on your active roster? |
