If you place a claim as the #1 waiver order... it's automatically yours at that moment.
So he's awarded to you at 11:27pm on 11/22. You have until 11:27pm on 11/23 to clear room.

Looks like your set on moves. But for the future, here's how I see cut/waiver scenarios...

Johnson was cut on November 22nd, 2011, 12:41 PM... from this moment, the 24-hour waiver period begins. If someone other than the team who's #1 on the waiver order makes a claim, we still have to wait until 12:41pm on 11/23 to make sure no one else puts in a claim.

Once the team who is #1 on the waiver order makes a claim, the player is IMMEDIATELY sold. In this case, your claim came in on... November 22nd, 2011, 11:27 PM. From this moment on, the 24-hour compliance clock begins. You needed to be all honkey-dorey by 11:27pm EST on November 23.

Make sense?

Since you brought it up I'll have to disagree. The rules clearly state IMO that players stay on waivers for 24 regardless of who claims them.

The Waiver Wire
Each player waived will be placed on the waiver wire for a period of 24 hours during In Season Free Agency, and 72 hours during Off Season Free Agency. During this period, each team will have the opportunity to claim the waived player and assume his current contract without the player reaching Free Agency. During the appropriate waiver wire period, each interested team must post in the origional "cut thread" indicating their intention to claim said player. At the end of the waiver wire period, the team with the highest current waiver priority (as defined later) will assume the players current contract. The claiming team will have the standard 24 hours from the time of the claim to make room on their roster, before Roster Penalties will be enforced. In that case, the team with the second highest waiver priority will assume the players contract. If no teams make a claim for a waiver player within the waiver period, the player is considered an Unrestricted Free Agent.

Seems pretty straight forward to me. Doesn't mention ending the 24 hours period early if the #1 team claims the player.

I guess it's just the common sense in me that if the #1 person makes a claim, the waiver period is OVER! But you're right, it doesn't specifically lay it out in the rules. However, I'd still stand by my interpretation for future claims... unless there's an uprising from the masses.

Isn't it unfair to give the #1 guy less time to get in compliance just because he is top of the wire?

Regardless, it's probably a good idea to update the rules and spell out the change of how this will be handled going forward!

Again, I'm open to hearing others' opinions... but I don't see how it's unfair, since everyone has a full 24-hours to get into compliance once ANY player is acquired... either UFA, waiver or trade.
