Buffalo Foods

Ok, I gotta say it sure was nice to be able to pig out on all the great fast food that Buffalo has to offer. I just returned from a week trip to Buffalo and I ate at Ted's, Andersons, La Nova's, Mighty Taco etc.. as many times as I possibly could while I was there. You that live there don't know what treasures you have at your finger tips that the rest of us have to do without as a punishment for having moved.

I came back home to Orlando with 15lbs of Sahlens hot dogs, 5 twelve packs of Aunt Rosie's Loganberry, 6 sticks of Margareta pepporoni and a 3lb pack of Wardinski's Polish Sausage. If I had more money and room in the cooler I would have brought back much more. (I only visit Buffalo every 6 years or so) ;)

I have looked online and actually found a couple places to buy these and other famous buffalo foods. I found a couple places but they kill you on shipping, so it's really not feasable unless your rich.

At anyrate.... Mike I think when I start to run out I'm gonna have to call in the favor I did you when I originally setup this board by having you make some purchases for me and shipping them down to me. I'll pay you of course for the food and shipping, I just can't afford the inflated costs that these web sites charge.

Buffalo may not be the best place in the world to live but it does have it's advantages, and fast food is deffinately one of them. I think I miss the food more than my family there.... jk

, the shipping costs are so high because of the Dry Ice thats needed to keep the products cold. Most the products you mentioned need to be refrigerated, thus the high shipping costs. The weight of these products plays a role too.

Your right BTW, the fast foor here rocks, but it's also extremely high in fat and cholesteral (go figure)!

As for Tacos, Elmwood Taco & Sub blows away Mighty Taco. Also, for Hot Chicken Wings Duffs in Orchard Park or Amherst is the place to go.

Other great local eats are Panos on Elmwood for Greek, Schwabels in West Seneca for Roast Beef, and Lam's Kitchen in Hamburg for Chinese.

Let me know when your stock runs out , I'll see what I can do, but you may have to find a way to get dry ice, as I've never sought it out before!

Some of that stuff needs to be refrigerated but not all.... for example, Loganberry syrup, Margarita Pepperoni sticks, Webers Mustard etc...

The hotdogs, sausage etc would of course need dry ice though.

The places I found charge outrages amounts for shipping even for the non-refrigerated stuff.

My wife said that here family sends her refregerated food like cheese etc from Puerto Rico all the time..... there is a trick that makes using Dry Ice unneccesary.

She said they first freeze the food for 2 days, then they put in zip lock bags, then they warp it bubble warp and then in newspaper (in case it starts to leak water the newspaper soaks it up).

They then send it overnight or even 2day and it gets here still partially frozen or sometimes thawed out but still cold.

oh another think I miss... and that I brought back here with me... Ted's Hot Sauce. It's like a relish mixed with hot sauce, it makes Sahlen's hot dogs even better! ;) You can only get it at Ted's though..... go figure.

Ted's Hot Sauce is AWESOME. Nothing beats a Ted's Dog with everything on it!

Okay... it's 12:30pm here in the islands... the sun is out... and I was debating on what to have for lunch (McD's? pizza? Subway? Chinese? Sushi?)... when all of the sudden, I have a craving for hotwings. GO FIGURE! Fortunately, there's a place called "Dirty Lickins" that has really good buffalo wings. Now, I can't compare them to any wings that are actually FROM Buffalo (though Mike did send me some good sauces a few years ago for Christmas!)... but that's what I'm going to go get for lunch.

Yea, you can find pretty decent hot wings (AKA Buffalo Wings outside of Buffalo) but they usually aren't as big as the ones you get at a few of the places in Buffalo.

Sahlen's hot dogs have got to be the thing I miss most though, they are just so damn good, and Ted's does them so perfect over a charchole grill fresh and hot before your eyes for each customer. For my money a Ted's hotdog with everything, homemade onion rings and a large Loganberry pop(A crossbread berry which was created accidentaly mixing blackberrys with red rasberrys by a guy with the last name of Logan in California). My wife used to think I was nuts when I said that you would go to a "hotdog place" and eat for dinner, she always thought of hot dogs as a kids meal or something you ate as an extra at a BBQ. After eating at Ted's she changed that. Also she has never liked Roast Beef at all... infact she has always said she thinks it's gross, well after having a Beef on Weck at Anderson's that has changed, she LOVED it. Buffalo food.... ahhh the best.

Dang... I thought my lunch was pretty good... but that hotdog post is making me hungry again! Let's see... 30 minutes until the Hawaii/Michigan NIT "great 8" game... then pick up the kids... nah, don't think I have enough time to get out to Buffalo & back for that dog. But would LOVE to taste it someday!

Yea, that was my ultimate goal... to make everyone's mouth water.

In all seriousness though. Buffalo fast food beats any I've had anywhere... and considering I've been to 20+ states and 30+ countries around the world that's saying a lot!

Now if Buffalo had nice weather and more jobs.... it would be a great place to live.... but it doesn't so.... I'll stick to Orlando and just have to bribe my family to send me my old time favorites!

Hmm, I'm starting to think that the Minnesota State Fair isn't the pinacle of food I thought it was. Sure, you can get anything you want on a stick (including pie and aligator meat), and anything deep fried (including candy bars) and I could eat cheese curds for 24 hours straight, but the hot dogs sure aren't as good as they sound like in Buffalo. I'm also quite sure I've never had a hot wing that compares to true BUffalo wings. I can't phathom making a trip to Buffalo just for the food, but maybe I'll have to check out that website option.

For wahat it's worth, the original owners of Ted's opened a store in Tempe Arizona a few years back (where they retired to). They ship all the ingeredients and materials down there from Buffalo and serve up the same dogs with the same extras as they do here.

The chain is family run still, and has been for over 60 years. Great food.
