ya know what's even funnier... Joe cut the Packers Defense 3 minutes before bidding on the Bills, and that means, barring a trade or a DS activation he'll be in violation of the 5 TE/K/D rule!!!
This is yet another classic move from a West Division GM if I'm correct! LMFAO! I think I'll let it slide (as long as he gets the Bills without any counters), but it is pretty funny. Although, maybe I should levy some sort of fine, seeing as this will be a 2nd offense (though clearly unintentional). You Western boys have it down don't cha!!! The GM of the year award will NOT come from the left coast, that much is for sure! Last edited by Preds; November 4th, 2004 at 09:56 PM. |

SHould I be evil and up the Bills? I mean we are fighting for a divison title?
And I'm still a bit bitter by having him dump Ricky Williams AND Shuan Alexander on me. ALthough it did work out for me. Beg for mercy Joe?

It's gonna suck hitting him with a 2nd offense penalty on the TE/K/D rule. I mentioned to Brian a couple weeks ago that I think we might want to revisit the mandatory rule for this in the off-season, since it's one of the more popular rule violations. I think this will be our 4th incident this year. |

I don't think the problem is so much the 5 roster spots alloacted to TE/PK/DEF as it has done it's job: Provide roster space for backups w/o drastically changing the market. IMO it has doen so as player slaries have remained pretty consistent year in and year out yet b/c of the extra roster space and the 500cbs we have back ups at positions that most likely would be neglected in this type of league. So I don't think that's the problem.
THE problem is, and this hit me when I lost out on Moulds, is the process on which we handle in-season free agency. I didn't want to bring it up then because it would seem like sour grapes, but Mike you brought up the perfect segue. Really the problem is this 24 hour period we place on FA transactions and the other rules affected by them. The 24 hour period is such a short span that it would require a GM to check out the boards everyday. Most people do, however there are times when we can't or don't want to. Really why is this 24 hour time period put in place during the week? Games don't start until the following Sunday and later on in the season the earliest is Thursday on rare occasions, but by then there should only be a few teams active as our playoffs would be in progress. SO basically we have 5 days from Tuesday to Saturday of NFL inactivity. Nothing. Nada. So why are we handcuffing ourselves to 24 hrs after a FA has signed? Makes no sense really. My suggetsion would be to change the time period for handling all the transactions for FA won (roster cuts, TE/PK/DEF complience, contract years, etc.) from 24 hours after to say Saturday at 9PM. This will allow owners the ability to work out trades or sign more players to fill needs or cut payroll. It's really a simple solution and I gurantee all of the penalties will become almost non-exisstant and the league will be better for it. I really can't think of any cons besides the time constraints that will be placed on updating the apps and the roster, but if you set the time say Saturday at 6PM EST or 9PM EST (giving us west coast a few extra hours to wake up) there's enough time for that. Thoughts?

For example, say I'm the high bidder on Joe Schmo WR at 850 cbs. I know I'm willing to pay as much as 1250 cbs, but if I can get him at 850, great! At 8:59 Mike logs on and bids 855 and before I can increase the bid, the time is over and I lose out. Now, we could make a provision... say if you want to be in the "final bidding" for a player, then after the 9pm deadline, each owner can make up to 3 bids. The first two can be countered by the other owner. Round 3 would then be a "blind bid" where they'd post the most they'd be willing to pay. Winner takes all on that one. Now, having said all that, I don't really think there's a problem with the 24 hour signing period. If you need a player and are going to be away, contact another owner and have them proxy bid for you. My $.02. |

I'm noy exactly sure what the proposal is. Are we moving the deadline to make necessary cuts, etc from within 24 hours of winning an auction to saturday, or are we ending all bidding on saturday? I'm confused. I don't like the idea of letting people wait to make cuts until satuday, because they could hold players other teams might want to bid on and cut them saturday, and then people wouldn't have a chance to sign them before the games start on sunday.
I do think there is an easier way to solve the TE/K/D situation that is causing all of the penalties. Instead of making teams replace those cut players cut within 24 hours, give them until the end of bidding that week to sign replacements. That way, I can cut a kicker on tuesday, and just make sure I have a replacement by the end of the week, not within 24 hours of cutting the kicker. The roster app would have to be checked each sat to make sure everyone is in compliance, so this might not be the easiest to track. I'm not sure what the best solution is here. |

I just don't see a problem with the current way we handle it.

Sorry for not clarifying. I'm no way am I mentioning an Ebay situation with Saturday as an end date.
I am suggesting of replacing the 24 hours period to make roster declartions and cuts after WINNING a free agent to be replaced by having all this done by Saturday. Ex. Player A is bid on Tuesday Player A is sold on Wednesday Contract years and other roster requirements not due until that Saturday. Basically by Saturday... teams have to be able to fit the won player under their cap and meet the minimum roster requirements. Instead of having to do all this by Thursday... they get an extra two days to either trade for or away player or make cuts. If a player sells on Saturday.... then tough luck, unless we'd make a provision that they'd have to fit them under the cap before Tuesday, but they wouldn't be eligible for that weeks games. I think this would be the best way to solve this problem. I don't understand why we're only given 24 hours.

Oh... I could live with that. We still keep the 24 hour bidding period... but allow until the end of the week to post cuts/fill roster spots, etc. Makes sense to me. It would also allow us to possible receive trade offers on potential cuts.

That keeps players that should be cut and available to others off the market too long... and it allows teams to exceed the roster size and cap for several days. You can't do that in the NFL, and I'm not in favor of allowing it in the Frenzy either. I think that if you have the high outstanding bid on a player, you should be aware of when it's going to sell. That's not asking too much. And already allowing a 24 hour grace period is quite generous IMO. Going beyond that is not something I can or will support. #$#@*)($!@
Looks like technically I screwed the pooch again. I was operating under the assumption that I still had Hanson on my roster when I cut Green Bay but I should have waited till I won another def before cutting GB. GDB being sick Friday and not being able to check till now. #$)(@*&$)#@ And the beat goes on............ |

I'll allow your explanation since you never officially made a cut thread for Hanson, and you cut GB within the 24 hours of when you picked them up. No Roster Penalty will be assessed (aside from the cb penalty for dropping GB's D) |

OKay did some research on player cuts. I just sifted through the forum and checked who was cut so far this year.
86 Player Cuts 79 unique players cut Marcus Pollard 2x Amos Zereou 3x Brad Johnson 2x Aaron Stecker 2x Green Bay DEF 2x Eric Moulds 2x (24 hr. roster violation) Of the 86 player cuts 26 have resigned and 2 more are in the process of selling (Stephen Davis, Peerless Price). Of the 26 that have resigned 10 have sold within 7 days of the cut making them eligble to start the following week. 5 out of 10 have started the following week they were acquired (Gardner, Bettis, Zereoue, Redskins DEF, Moulds) the other 5 (B. Johnson, Stecker, Chatman, Putzier, Garcia) did not suit up. Of the 8 of the 10 that were resigned within a week were cut due to FA acquistions made during that week. Jessie Chatman and Jeff Garcia were to lower player salaries. So use this info as you will in regards to the 24hr period vs. Satruday deadline. After viewing the data I am still in favor of it. Mike said the NFL doesnt let teams go over the roster space for more than 24 hours, but we're not exactly the NFL. We're not getting paid to watch over our teams everyday. Most of us do but there are times when we can't or won't. I think this suggestion has merit and I was wondeirng how many owners would be in support of such a deadline.
