Titans Rookie DB Adam "Pacman" Jones Arrested

inline imageI'm getting REAL tired of NFL athlete's (or any athlete in general) doing this crap.

It's getting old real fast. THere are more stories about arrests these days than anything else related to the sport.

What, the players think they're in the NBA or what? The hoodlum act and posse crap are just plain stupidity IMO.

If you were in-line for a multi-million dollar contract, do you REALLY think it's wise to hang out with friends from the hood who can, and most likely will bring you down? Granted, maybe you want to bring them out of the hood, but if there acting the same way, why bother.

Ugh.

Anyhow, here's a :Link http://www.wkrn.com/Global/story.asp...5&nav=1ugBc50e

Quote:
Titans first-round draft pick Adam "Pacman" Jones surrendered to Metro Police late Wednesday morning on assault and vandalism charges stemming from an alleged early-morning nightclub incident.

Jones was booked into the jail and is to appear before a judge later Wednesday for a bail hearing. Jones' lawyer, Roger May, said he hadn't yet seen the warrant, but understood the charges to be simple assault and vandalism. Both are misdemeanors.

Two men who said they were assaulted by Jones appeared before the Metro Night Court commissioner early Wednesday morning, demanding the Titans rookie be taken into custody. The general manager of the nightclub, former Nashville Kats player Robert Gatty, claims that he and a bouncer at the club were assaulted by Jones just after midnight Tuesday.

According to the men's testimony, the altercation began when a few of Jones' friends were asked to leave the nightclub for allegedly smoking marijuana. Jones then allegedly lunged at the two men. Gaddy said Jones ripped his shirt and broke the necklace he was wearing.

"I hope he learns a lesson from this," said Gaddy. "I don't want nothing real bad to happen to him because of this. But I'm doing this to teach him a lesson. And you just can't go around thinking you are above the law, and act a fool any way you want to act. There are rules and laws that govern this society, and he has to learn that he's not above the law."

In the meantime, Jones' agent Michael Huyghue issued a statement early Wednesday, stating: "Regrettably, there are certain individuals out there who are opportunists who prey on professional athletes for financial gain. And unfortunately, this is one of those incidents."

A spokesman said the Titans were aware of the situation and were monitoring it, but had no immediate comment.

Police investigated a report that Jones was involved in a fight in a nightclub near Atlanta in April, but no charges were filed against him in that case.

Jones' arrest is the fourth of a Titans player this year.

The 5-foot-10 Jones, who played for West Virginia, was the first defensive player taken in the NFL Draft in April. He hurt himself in the Titans' rookie orientation on April 29 and couldn't practice with the team until June 14.

Tennessee chose Jones for his 4.45-second speed in the 40-yard dash and 37 1/2-inch vertical jump as they try to replace veterans Samari Rolle and Andre Dyson.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I'm a big fan of the NBA and frankly it seems as if NFL players get arrested more often than NBA players.

You're not seriously going to try and defend the NBA's hoodlem reputation are you?

It's a reputation that's not deserved. Kobe aside.... what NBA players have you heard that have gotten arrested in the off-season for something other than possession of marijuana?

Do they dress urban? Yes. Do they talk urban? Yes.

But it seems to me NBA players have better self-control than NFL players... maybe it's due to the nature of the sport... who knows they're still dumbasses.

Hmm, I seem to recall the murder of a certain bodyguard of a certain Philadelphia 76er not too long ago...

MLB looks like the National Honors Society compared to the NBA and NFL.

i agree with frank on this one. there do seem to be quite a few more thugs in the NFL than the NBA

Jason Williams "accidently" (i wasn't there) shot his limo driver, but that was after he had retired from the NBA.

Really NBA getting arrested pop up maybe once or twice a year and aside form the big cases (Kobe- rape, Williams-manslaughter, Iverson-rampging at wife) NBA players generally are less violent.

The only thing I could find this year is Chris Wilcox getting caught with a handgun.

On the other hand we hear mutltiple stories every offseason about NFL players getting arrested.

As I said to Frank via IM, NFL players are not much better, but the big difference is that the NFL distances itself from the "hood" image, whereas the NBA seems to embrace it in everything from Arena Music, to Marketing.

How is that not a good point?

The instances for NBA players that you bring up are all in the past. Every year however there are multiple NFL players arrested for violent crimes.

So I was debating with Mike over AIM.

He agrees that the NFL and NBA both have bad images, however he qualifies the NFL as better b/c they don't embrace that "hood" image where as the NBA does.

That's a bunch of baloney and I am very close to calling it ignorance.

Both leagues promote their superstars.

It just so happens the NBA superstars (american born) are young black males who are from the hood. Who are statistically the poorest ethnic group in America.

Lucky for the NFL though that they can promote Peyton Manning and a various other good 'ol country boys. It also helps that most NFL QBs, the most prolific position, are white.

So both leagues promote their superstars. It just so happens the NBA are hood and the NFL's are country boys. Can you fault them?

Edit to add....

So viewing the NBA as bad because of the culture and environment of the players (in the NBA and those not in the league) publicized is from my viewpoint racial discrimination.

NBA players cause riots, I agree, that was very sad to see but you also have to share the blame with the fans.

Marketing for the NFL and NBA are completely different. To deny that is ignorance. The NFL consciously chooses to market Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, etc. prominantly in spots on Sundays, and in their United Way campaigns. If the NBA marketing team ran the NFL marketing plan, we'd see Randy Moss as the marketing superstar. While Randy Moss does get his share of endoresments, it's not in a United Way campaign where he is cleaning up a poor neighborhood with the local kids (which is ironic since Randy actual does do this kind of work), but he doesn't get the marketing because of his image. When the NFL makes a marketing gaffe like with Terrell Owens on MNF last year, a big deal is made of it because of the bad taste. The NBA would have celebrated such a marketing coup as that was.

Point proven.... the NFL MARKETS ITS WHITE SUPERSTARS even though a majority of it's players and Pro-Bowl athletes are black.

The NBA has NO WHITE SUPERSTAR (from america)!

So from that viewpoint which league is bad?

The NFL is bad because it uses white superstars to market to white america?

Also, just to expand on my point, the NFL also uses anyone of good public reputation for it's spots, including Eddie George, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice (all back in their day). They do not exclusively use white athletes, but generally do not use athlete's with "gangsta" reputations, because that is not their market.

:agree

I don't think it's a discriminatory viewpoint either.

I'll also point out that several prominant black NFL athletes are promoted by the NFL as a whole, and with their United Way connections. I don't see the NFL as only promoting white country boy QB's.

What about Micahel freaken Vick? The guys a marketing machine with avg production thus far. Or Donovan McNabb. He's a class act, and the NFL promotes him as such.

So is it the NBA fault that there are no white superstars?

But marketing is beside the point.

The fact of the matter is that you guys view the NBA as bad b/c of its image due to it's black superstars. Which is racial discrimination. Even though the NFL and NBA have criminal histories.

Not even close, and that's quite the acusation you are throwing there. It's not the mere fact that they are black, it is the fact that they do not shy away from their bad reputations. Allen Iverson is a major marketing force in the NBA. Edgerrin James is not for the NFL.

But the NBA embraces the negative image... what part are you not getting? My "discrimination" (in your eyes) has nothing to do with color, and everything to do with the stereotypical gangsta image the NBA seems to embrace.

They could easily promote their stars without sinking to the level of embracing the gantsa image IMO, and the sport would be better off because of it.

My point is what is wrong with that gangsta image?

The only reason the "gangsta" image is wrong is because it does not fit with white America. However, the majority of basketball players are black and are from urban areas where the "gangsta" image is the norm. What is wrong with that image?

Nothing different than any other image.

That is why I view it as discrimination.

Well, lets see, the "gansta" image embraces GUNS, VIOLENCE, SEX, DISRESPECT TO AUTHORITY, DISRESPECT TO POLICE, etc...

Yeah, I want my 10yo having that pushed in his face eveywhere he turns.

I agree, a 10yo should probably not be exposed to that kind of thing. (Damn Charlton Heston) So of course you make sure and shelter him from westerns and the "cowboys and indians" toys and entertainment, right Mike? That racket has had the Guns and Violence market cornered for ages, long before the "gangstas" were able to start making money. Of course, Westerns didn't necessarily teach us to disrepect authority or police - they just went for the gusto and taught as all to disrespect an entire culture of people.

Man, but those damn "gastas" ... :BS

:GoodPost

Also on the NBA promoting the gangsta image... aside from promoting their superstars who come from the ghettos, how else does the NBA portray a gangsta image? An image that is not deserved as I hope most agree that the NFL suffers from far more violent crimes.

I don't see the NBA endorsed weed pipes, guns, strip clubs, and armor piercing bullets.

I think it would be more accurate to say that the NBA promotes pop culture if anything. You referenced gangsta music... but since when did the Black Eyed Peas, Pink, and Gwen Stafani become gangsta? NBA arenas may play rap music but if you listen to the lyrics, they often only play songs that are more pop-rap. None of the gangster rap you are objecting. If anything the rap music played can be faulted for objectifying women... but most rap arena music I can gurantee is not the gangster rap you protest.

I believe it is more accurate to say that the NBA promotes to a YOUNGER audience, than the NFL and it's fairly obvious to a different ethnic group or region? Basketball is more popular in urban cities, while football rules in the middle states.

Really aside from their superstars (no choice it is who their superstars are) and music (play all pop music) used how else does the NBA promote the "gangsta" image?

AI gets a bad rap for his tattoos and prior run ins with the law and his coaches but have you seen him play? He plays the game with such heart that all basketball fans appreciate that.

Has AI been bad in the past? Yes. When he was younger, but now he's matured and been out of trouble.

AI is very similiar to certain NFL linebacker who has connections with a murder. Yet he's everywhere and pariased because he plays the game with heart and intensity.

It goes both ways. So to say the NFL is better than the NBA is ignorant.

Ray Lewis was demonised for the trial and his actions. His reputation was smeared with discovery of the video he was in and all that. His promotion by the league took a dip for a year or two. Since then, he's kept his nose clean and by all accounts has been a model citizen. AI may have stayed out of jail, but he rails against his coaches, complains about practice and is just a plain old thug.

There are plenty of NBA superstars who do not come from the hood; Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, Shaq, the list goes on an on. NBA marketing is not dictated by the source of their players, it is a conscious decision to use the image of the players it does.

And seriously, if I have to answer the question of what is wrong is the gangsta image, I'm going to bail on this conversation. I'm already in more than enough irrational debates.

AI had beef with Brown, but now that he's matured he loves him and shows him respect and if anyone can afford to miss practice it is Iverson who gives up his body dozens of plays a game, everytime he drives into the lane. He gets body slammed by PF and Centers. If Steve McNair can miss practice to heal injuries and start in games.... why can't Iverson coast through practice? McNair is lauded for his toughness, Iverson's get overlooked by people scared of what is not the same as them.

And labeling Iverson as a plain old thug is the kind of mentality I'm talking about. You can't fault a guy for dressing the way he does. Because you surely don't mean AI's actions label him as a thug, because that means you MUST label Ray Lewis as one. He's involved in a murder.... has Iverson?

Disrespect coaches? Not anymore... and ask any Jim O'Brien is a stupid coach. AI wasn't the only one who was unstaisfied. Doesn't respect authority? What's the latest incidence of that?

If you look beyond the tattoos, baggy clothing, and speech (a product of an environment, they have no control over and setup to live in for eternity, that's another topic) you would see a person who has matured into a family man.

Also if you don't remember AI was one of the FIRST NBA SUPERSTARS to volunteer himself to play in the Olympics while others shied away.

AND LIKE I SAID THE NBA DOESN'T PROMOTE A GANSTER IMAGE! What proof is there other than promoting their superstars who dress the way they've always dressed? Oh yah I forgot about seeing Steve Nash, Manu Ginobli, Yao Ming, and Dirk Nowitzki to go along with Tim Duncan, Shaq, KG, Ray Allen, and the like.

Oh yah and damn that gangster music the NBA plays... Damn Black Eyed Peas and "Let's Get it Started!" never heard anything more gangster than that! DAMN THEM! I want Leanne Rimes!!
