Default Drop - DB Mike Rumph (1 yr/110 cb)

Okay, here is a silly question? When do we subtract contract years and give the 10% raise? I had Rumph for 2 years at 100 cb's. Which I think in this soft cap period will cost me $15 or $16 in cap penalties. However, if he is now on a one year deal for $110 the cap penalty would be $11.

I don't care which it is, his butt is getting cut! Nice ring to it, actually. Anyhow, can someone let me know so I can make sure my records are accurate?

Thanks!

The hard cap period begins April 1. That is the same time the new contract year starts, so your options are to cut him now at a 2 year @100 cb contract, or wait until after April and cut him at 1 year @110. If you cut him now it would be 16 cb for this year and next, but if you wait it would be 22 cb all next year.

through March 31st it's still a soft cap move, with the cap hit split between the 2005 and 2006 caps, plus any applicable signing bonus. The cap hit on a 2 year 100cb deal would be 20% of 100cb's, or 20cb's, plus the signing bonus for year 2 of 11cb's (10% f the contract value). Thus 20+11=31 divided by 2 = 15.5cb's which will be rounded up to 16cb's against 2005, and 16 against 2006.

April 1 and after it's a 2006 hard cap hit, which would be 20% of his last year contract of $110 or 22cb's.

Thanks to you both for chiming in!! I would like to cut him now (today) and have $16 count against the 2005 cap and 16 count against the 2006 cap. Thanks!

Does he have to have the cap room to do it though? Didn't look at his final salary, so just asking....

Well, he clears 100 cbs by dropping the player. The 16cb penalty is much smaller, so yes, cap room is not an issue.
