Default Franchise Player Question

The rules for Franchising a player reads:

8B. Franchising

Once a players contract ends, they becomes a free agent, however, teams are allowed to designate up to 1 player as a Franchise Player. Once a team designates a Franchise Player, that player is considered part of their active roster and the tendered salary counts against the teams cap. THE FRANCHISED PLAYER WILL RECEIVE A SALARY OF THE AVERAGE OF THE TOP 10 PLAYERS AT THE FRANCHISED PLAYERS POSITION FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR, OR A 20% SALARY INCREASE, WHICHEVER IS GREATER. The franchised players salary will count against the teams cap, starting April 1st.

My question concerns the part in capital letters. Do you include those players that are Free Agents or just those players that are on a (SACD) team roster?

Ok I think I found the answer. At least it was the answer I was hoping for.

I know I have missed salaries before (Manning on IR all last year without any stats) - I guess I did not consider those who were cut after the season ended...

Rules committee...thoughts?

Pat, I suppose you calculate the top 10 salaries in your spreadsheet based on who is currently in the spreadsheet on a roster ?

My question concerns J.C. Watt. When you sort the DT/DE by salary 4 players that are FAs show in the top 10. My original thought was the SACD FAs would not count and we would use the top 10 that are actually on a SACD roster at years end. I think the thread I found confirms this?

I didn't realize that some NFL IR players that are on SACD rosters didn't show on MFL.

I don't calculate the top 10 salaries in the spreadsheet. If you go to the website, click on Top Players and then sort by Salary, you should get the desired results (just exclude any 0 and negative years players).

Actually, I think you would just look at the non-FA players.

Right..I understand that we would not include FA that never had a contract tendered in the year being looked at. The link Bobby included above, has a post from Mike, that implies a player cut before April 1st salary roll over, would also not be included in the average. I am not sure I agree with that, or that we have done this in the past...

So for example, do we include Dwight Freeny's salary in the average, even though he was cut by Tommyknockers mid-season?

The rule does say the top 10 at that position, not at that position at the end of the season. I would say yes, salaried players who were cut at any time during the year would count in calculating the top 10 player salaries at the position from the previous year.

In my opinion, the rule would cover all players that spent all or part of the season on a teams roster for that year, so anyone on the MFL site that has a years value greater than zero.

In my opinion we should follow the rules as they were written until we vote to change them. The person that wrote the rules interpreted it different. See the link in post # 2.

Ok. I can see Bobby's point with the previous interpretation.

Assuming we're using the Franchise rules as Mike intended (since we haven't voted to change them), I have another question. Mike stated

"These numbers could change with any cuts between now and April 1st. The Franchise numbers will be based on the final Top 10 contracts for each position at the end of the day on March 31st."

Are those players with 1 year contracts still under contract at the end of the day?
