I wish I had the cap room to continue bidding on Cloud, if for no other reason than to keep him from the Undead. Unfortunately I do not.
There is one thing I want to bring up though, I could have bid on him with no real intention of signing him, instead just to keep him away from the Undead. Although technically legal this is not something I would ever do or want done to me. Perhaps we should make a rule next year that teams that bid on free agents during the playoffs and win those bids MUST add those players to their team. For example, I could have continue to bid on Cloud even though I really didnt want to cut anyone, just to keep him away from the Undead. Perhaps I would have "forgotten" to post a roster cut to make room, thus making my bid for him null but I accomplished what I wanted, to keep Cloud from the Undead. This is something we should definitely make a specific rule for next year so it doesnt happen. Perhaps requiring each bid to be accompanied by a legal roster cut which will provide sufficient cap space to sign the free agent if that bid is won. Just my thoughts. |

Know what I'd love to see? I rule that would allow free agent bidding (both in season, and post season) to end Saturday night, so that the player can be used that week. Say, for all free agents bid on Wednesday of the week, bidding would end on 11:59 pm the following Saturday. That would allow you to pick up a player if you needed him that week.
I know it would be difficult to come up with a system, given our message board limitations, that would prevent the last minute bidding. My preference for a system would be a blind auction. Once a player is opened up for bidding, anyone interested in that player submits a secret bid (process discussed later) which represents the max that team in interested in bidding on for that player. The highest bid gets that player for the minimum bid above the next highest bid. For example, I throw out JJ Stokes for bidding on Wednesday. Everyone crashes the boards submitting their bids. The Predators bid 250, the Squirels 350, and the Dodgers (cause the are so savy) bids 500. I have the highest bid, so I get them. The next highest bid was 350, so I get Stokes for 355 (since no one else was willing to go that high. If the player in question went for 2500, and the next highest bid was 2000, the he is won for 2050 (50 being the bid increment at that level). How would this be done? I have no idea. I know it wouldn't work on the message board, since we'd all be able to see each others bids. I'm sure this idea won't get too much support, so I'll stop contemplating it and leave work for crying out loud. |
